GIRLS CARNIVAL A BIG SUCCESS
Subiaco Youth Girls Shine in Wet and Windy Conditions
The 2011 Subiaco District Youth girls were greeted by heavy rain and strong wind gusts as they took part in the annual youth girls carnival held at Hamer Park in Mount Lawley on Sunday.
The carnival provide a chance for 25 girls from the Subiaco’s school zone to show their wears against the other WAFL districts and country zones in a round robin competition.
The David Traynor coached side drew a pool comprising of West Perth, Claremont/East Perth and the South West teams. With the girls winning two , having a narrow loss to Claremont and then losing to eventual grand finalists South West. David Traynor who trained the girls for 6 weeks prior to the carnival said “It’s fantastic to give the opportunity for girls to play for their district as most only get to play in the schools competition. The girls enjoy the increase in pace and skill level which will prepare many of them to transition into senior women’s football in their years after school”
2011 was the first year the Subiaco District fielded a standalone team in the round robin competition, with previous years joining surrounding teams. District Manager Ben Haywood said “It’s great to have passionate people like Dave on board whose drive and dedication ensure that carnival such as these occur. Our Women’s team, the Coastal Titans were also crucial in filling the other volunteer roles such as runner, water carriers, boundary umpires and goal umpires which went along way to ensuring the girls had a great day.” “To have the whole female pathway on show is of great credit to all involved” Mr Haywood said.
It is hoped that these girls, now having a taste of Australian football will transition from school football to senior women’s football at the Coastal Titans and maybe, even one day an AFL women’s competition.
