Colts swipe the Falcons
- Saturday, 19 May 2012
The Lions have demolished the West Perth Falcons at Arena Joondalup today recording a 12.10 (82) to 5.9 (36) victory.
The Colts lead from start to finish, gradually opening a giant deficit as they dominated scoring chances 22 to 14.
Key performances came from the usual suspects in the midfield today with James Garcia collecting 30 possessions and 7 inside 50’s joined by Kyle Halligan and Dylan Clarke who completely outran the Falcons taggers.
Michael Wood had another impressive game with three goals straight, joined by a gaggle of new contributors in Jordan Webster, Dylan Clarke and Mitchell Sheppard who all had two.
Head Coach Steve Armstrong was extremely pleased with his sides’ effort, especially considering they were missing key players Dom Sheed and Dave Madut because of State selection.
James Garcia probably played his best game of the year today and it came at a time of need. Facing a top four team without leading ball winner Dom Sheed was always going to be a challenge, but the nature in which Garcia outplayed the West Perth midfield was impressive. The Sorrento-Duncraig product came up with 30 possessions today along with seven entries into the forward 50.
It appears Kyle Halligan saw my monthly review about his inconsistency and is giving it back to me. The winger has averaged 23 disposals since and has become a key player for the Lions midfield. He is definitely a player to keep an eye on for the rest of the season as we watch him develop as an on-baller.
Dylan Clarke started the game hot, gathering six disposals in the first ten minutes. His smaller stature seems to catch the opposition unaware, evident today when he found holes in the Falcons defence multiple times. Clarke has a lot of potential to develop into a top player in this squad.
KNOCK ON WOOD:
The Lions have found a key goal-kicker in the form of Michael Wood. Wood’s kicked seven goals straight in the last two games and could prove to be the difference in games to come.
If you were to pick a Lions Colts player for Dream Team this week it’s hard to look past James Garcia who racked up 125 points. For a consistent pick it would either be Charles Le Fanu (85) or Kyle Halligan (100) who produce week in and week out. A bargain pick would be Mitchell Sheppard, who kicked two goals and scored 66 in his debut outing for the Lions.
