Coastal Titans Storm into GF
- Wednesday, 22 August 2012
THE Coastal Titans have stormed into the WAWFL League and Reserves Grand Finals with convincing wins over Swan Districts over the weekend.
After finishing the season undefeated, League minor premiers Coastal Titans suffered a shock, one-point loss to East Fremantle in the first Semi Final, meaning they had to face off against Swan Districts in the Preliminary Final to earn their Grand Final spot.
The Titans started the match like a team with something to prove, kicking the first early on and snaring another two through Sarah Noga and 2012 WAWFL League Leading Goal Kicker Kiara Bowers to give them a 19-point lead heading into the first break.
Swan Districts wrestled back momentum at the start of the second but were left to rue missed chances as the Titans made the most of theirs at the other end, kicking another two for the quarter while the Swans only managed five behinds.
Kiara Bowers again proved too much for the Swans defence and kicked the first of the third, but the Swans refused to give in, kicking their first of the match through Chelsea Randall before adding another in under a minute.
Any chance of a comeback was quickly snuffed out by the Titans however, with Kiara Bowers kicking her third and Nicole Bolton and Renee Forth added another two, giving the Coastal Titans a 42-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Despite the 42-point deficit, Swan Districts refused to lie down, and when Chelsea Randall kicked her second for the quarter and third for the match, they found themselves only 18-points down.
The fight back proved too little too late, however, and the Titans held on to win the match and their shot at East Fremantle in the Grand Final by 20 points.
The victory was the second of the day for the Coastal Titans whose reserves side also accounted for Swan Districts in the Reserves Preliminary Final.
An even first quarter saw the Titans up by just the two points at the first change, but after a five goal to nothing second quarter the lead had been stretched to 35 points at the major break.
The Swans came out after half time and threatened to get back into the contest, controlling the majority of the play and kicking one, but the Titans made them pay for an easy miss, rebounding down the other end and kicking another two to close out the term 40 points up.
Undisciplined acts cost the Swans early in the last - two free kicks in a row and a subsequent goal effectively end the contest, with the Titans eventually running out 53-point victors.
The victory means that Coastal Titans will now face Claremont in the WAWFL Reserves Grand Final this Sunday.
