Strong Finish Helps the Lions to Victory

Three late goals have helped Subiaco record their first victory of 2013, beating East Fremantle by 18 points.

The Lions kicked seven goals in the last quarter to seal a 13.8(86) to 10.8(68) victory.

.

Callum Sinclair did his chances of a round one derby debut no harm with 23 possessions, nine marks, 40 hitouts and three goals.

Rhys Waters had the ball 18 times and was assisted by Rhett Kerr (17 disposals, 1 goal) and Jason Bristow (17 disposals, 1 goal).

Subiaco started slowly and didn’t register a goal in the first quarter.  The 15 point deficit would have been even bigger if it wasn’t for the Sharks poor kicking.

The second quarter was more productive for the Lions as they scored five goals to East Fremantle’s two.  This meant that they held an 11 point lead at the main break.

Three goals to one in the third quarter helped the Sharks get back into the game but Subiaco managed to hang on for a one point lead at the last change.

Subiaco’s hopes of securing their first win of the season were helped when Rhett Kerr kicked a goal inside the first minute of the last quarter and extend the lead to seven points.

This was the first of seven goals that the Lions kicked for the last quarter compared to the Sharks four.  Goals to Sean Henson and Brett Peake saw East Fremantle tie up the game at 68 points with not long to go.

Two quick goals to Subiaco extended the lead and when Callum Sinclair kicked his third the game was all but over.

First Quarter
Subiaco had an opening quarter they’d wish to forget.  The Lions were held goalless while the Sharks were wasteful in front of goal.

Second Quarter
Jarrad Schofield had his team in the huddle longer than expected and kept the umpires and East Fremantle waiting at the start of the second quarter.  Whatever Schofield said worked as the Lions kicked five goals to one, turning a 15 point deficit into an 11 point lead at the main break.

Third Quarter
The Sharks closed the gap in the third quarter and a goal by Adrian Ricciardello on the siren meant that Subiaco only lead by one point.

Fourth Quarter
Both teams went goal for goal early on in the last quarter before Subiaco were able to kick five of the last seven goals to win the match.

Star Performer
Callum Sinclair was dominant from start to finish and literally stood head and shoulders above other players on the ground.  The big man certainly did his chances of a round one debut for the West Coast Eagles no harm with his performance in this match.
