Colts go down in nail-biter

Subiaco’s Colts have been held off by an inaccurate West Perth at Medibank Stadium to fall short by three points.

Classy forward Rhys McAlister almost pulled off a match winning performance with five of the Lions nine goals but lacked assistance in the forward line.

Connor Wilkinson was prominent in the midfield with 23 disposals and Max Walters returned to some of the form that saw him selected in the WA State Academy with 21 hard-fought possessions.

The loss comes as the Lions third of the season and the first loss against West Perth in Colts football since Round One of 2012.

The result leaves the Lions precariously placed in third position on a jam packed Colts ladder only a game ahead of Claremont, East Perth and East Fremantle.

  GAME CHANGERS

LAST QUARTER RAMPAGE:
The Lions came out in the last quarter with a mission; kicking four goals and attacking the ball with ferocity. The home side pulled within three points with four minutes to go but conceded a costly goal to the Falcons late. A Jak Cary goal pulled the score back to three points in the last minute of play but the Lions failed to get the ball into their forward line.

LONE RANGER:
Rhys McAlister has had a quiet start to 2014 but looks like he’s building momentum after a five goal bag. The 17 year old had to stand up against the Falcons with key forwards Cody Grace and Ryan Vermeersch out of the line-up and he provided a performance worthy of a win. McAlister will need more help as the season rolls on with players like Justin Woodley and Aaron Summers possessing the ability to kick goals.

FOUR QUARTER GAME:
A factor previously noted by captain Brennan Pearce and coach Steve Armstrong has been around the Colts inconsistency throughout four quarters. The Lions have statistically started fast in 2014 winning six of eight first quarters, but tend to lull throughout portions of the game. This happened in the third quarter against the Falcons where Subiaco only managed two scoring shots to West Perth’s nine.
