Lone Lion in WA Debut
- Thursday, 22 May 2014
Despite Subiaco’s barnstorming start to season 2014, just one Lions player has been selected to represent WA in this year’s state game.
George Hampson has been picked to represent his state for the first time when the WAFL team takes on the NEAFL in Sydney as a curtain raiser to the GWS vs Richmond game on Saturday.
VFL recruit Lachlan Delahunty and last year’s Simpson medalist Wayde Twomey were both late withdrawals after sustaining minor injuries against West Perth on the weekend.
Despite prolific starts to the season both Chris Phelan and Chris Deluca were overlooked by coach Bill Monaghan after making the initial 30-man squad.
Hampson’s versatility worked in his favour at the selection table.
The 24-year-old tied for last year’s club best and fairest award playing as a midfielder.
This year he’s enjoyed more time in the forward line and finds himself fifth in the WAFL goal kicking after 8 rounds.
Former Lions captain Aidan Parker was selected by Monaghan as an assistant charged with coaching the forward line.
Subiaco Football Operations Manager Luke Sanders will join the traveling party, scouting facilities at Greater Western Sydney’s home base.
Bounce Down on Saturday is at 10am WA time and the game can be streamed live on the NEAFL website.
