Friday Night Lights
- Friday, 11 July 2014
The Subiaco Lions have suffered their eighth loss of the season against West Perth under Friday night lights at HBF Arena.
The resurgent Falcons were too good for the young Lions with a harder attack on the ball and better ball use to record a 31 point win.
Tim Edwards and Max Walters had impressive games in the midfield despite the defeat with 24 and 20 touches respectively. 17 year-old Ethan Burnett was also a standout returning to the Colts from his Hale School Duties to gather 21 touches and seven inside 50's.
Ryan Vermeersch was an ominous presence in the forward line but gathered attention from two defenders at most contests. The powerful forward managed two goals alongside Kalgoorlie youngster Thomas Breeze who also booted two.
With Subiaco losing their second game to a bottom five side their finals position looks in jeopardy with the rest of the competition nipping at the heels.
An important clash looms next week as the Lions shift their focus towards the Perth Demons who are amidst a rampant winning streak.
Young midfielder Ethan Burnett was hot in his return to Colts football with 21 touches, seven inside 50's and three tackles. Burnett has been an exciting prospect since being recruited into the Subiaco Excellence Program and we are starting to see why.
CLARK DOWN, BUT NOT OUT
WA State 18’s representative Greg Clark has been playing good football in the last month but hearts went into mouths when he went down with a knee injury in the second. Clark was cleared of any serious damage halfway through the second and returned to the field to collect nine disposals in a quiet performance compared to his standards.
COLD NIGHT, HOT HEADS
The Lions let themselves down in a crucial part of the second quarter to concede two costly 50 metre penalties. Although both were relatively mild the Lions were hurt by goals being scored from both. Coach Steve Armstrong will be hoping for a more disciplined outfit against Perth next week.
