Liam Ryan had multiple clubs chasing his services in 2016 but the 19 year old forward opted for Subiaco.
Ryan drew interest from WAFL clubs after outstanding form in the GNFL and had Subiaco and East Perth vying for his talents. After getting acquainted with Subiaco through head coach Jarrad Schofield, Ryan chose to play for the Lions in 2016.
Since then the young forward has burst onto the scene as a highlights machine.
The Geraldton prospect has kicked 13.0 including two five goal hauls against Claremont and East Perth since making his debut. He also has taken two contenders for WAFL Mark Of The Year.
“The coaches saw the potential in him as soon as he started training. They knew something was there he just needed to get a base of fitness under him, because I don’t think he’s ever had a proper pre-season.” said Football Manager Daniel Vidovich
Subiaco weren’t able to get Ryan onto the park until Round 3 due to injury but since then he’s had a meteoric effect on the Lions.
“He missed the first two games but came in for the reserves against West Perth in Round Three. He was really good. To kick six goals in your first WAFL game is pretty impressive, so we know he’s got the skill it’s just about refining it.” said Vidovich
The exhilarating form of the young forward has deservedly sparked AFL interest but the club is focused on developing Ryan.
“He's got to continue to do the little things, like studying the vision and sticking to his work at the gym. There’s obviously areas the coaches still believe that he needs to work on so it’s up to him to keep improving,
"Obviously he’s playing some good footy but there’s also things that he will continue to work on.” said Vidovich
The Lions number 51 is a feel-good story and the Lions Football Manager is excited to see him develop in 2016.
“He’s a pretty special talent. He’s got such versatility because of his leap, he can play small or tall. He’s got that x-factor about him and we’re looking forward to seeing his game develop over the year.” added Vidovich
Ryan and the Subiaco Lions play Peel Thunder this Saturday at Medibank Stadium. Bounce down is 2:15 PM
