Tackling Prostate Cancer

As part of Men’s Health Week (June 13-19) the West Australian Football Commission has joined forces with Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia (PCFA) to raise awareness and funds for men’s health, in particular prostate cancer.

For too long prostate cancer has been a silent killer of our fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, sons and friends.

This year marks the third time football players across the state will don blue armbands as part of the Know Your Score round of WAFL to honour the men in WA who have lost their lives to prostate cancer.

All WAFL games played during the Know Your Score Round aim to raise awareness of prostate cancer and encourage men to be more proactive about their health by talking to their doctor about prostate cancer, as well as other major diseases they may be at risk of developing such as heart disease, lung cancer and strokes.

At the televised Perth v East Fremantle game umpires will wear blue ‘Know your Score’ shirts donated by WAFL broadcast sponsors Kennards Hire.

Before the game kicks off 250 blue balloons will be released at Lathlain Park to represent the most recent statistic of men who lose their life to prostate cancer in WA every year.

Know Your Score patron Glen Jakovich said it is crucial we keep on top of our health as it is an invaluable investment for the future.

“‘Being a professional athlete, I know the importance of being proactive about your health and wellbeing,” Jakovich said.

“I have been touched by cancer in my family, and I want to do everything possible to be here to watch my children grow up.”

Come along to the WAFL clashes on Saturday June 25 to support your club and raise the profile of prostate cancer.
