PREVIEW: RD 5 (2017) vs East Perth
Tuesday, 11 April 2017
Good Friday Football has arrived at the perfect time for Subiaco who are hoping to extend their winning form against East Perth at Leederville Oval.
The Lions (3rd) have won their last three games against Perth, West Perth and Peel and are looking to claim the scalp of their co-tenants East Perth this Friday.
The Royals (9th) have had a horror start to 2017 and are yet to record a victory at 0-4. East Perth have struggled to generate winning scores so far with an average of 61.5 points a game. Their latest outing against Claremont ended in a 36-point loss so the Royals will be desperate for a change of fortune.
Subiaco have established a strong balance over the last three games and the side has worked as a well drilled unit. Ben Sokol has been a strong addition into the forward line and the new arrivals are settling in with confidence.
The biggest advantage for Subi continually arises from an experienced midfield with a lot of chemistry. Captain Kyal Horsley, Chris Phelan, Leigh Kitchin and Lachlan Delahunty have proved themselves as an elite stoppage unit, despite the fact Subi often lose the hit-out tally. Phelan is 5th in the league for total disposals, Kitchin is 16th, Horsley is 21st and athletic ruck Delahunty is 23rd in the league for disposals.
The Lions will have an eye on Royals forward Will Maginness who has found form despite his side’s woes. Maginness kicked four goals against the Tigers last week and will probably draw the attention of either Aaron Heal or Joel Latham.
A couple of quality players from the West Coast Eagles are expected to wear the blue and black this Good Friday. One of them could be ex-Subi young gun Dominic Sheed who gathered 37 touches and seven inside 50’s last week against Claremont after being dropped by the Eagles. Other dangerous players include Francis Watson and Luke Partington, but WCE head coach Adam Simpson’s side selection will heavily influence the East Perth unit come Friday.
GOOD DISPOSAL IS KEY
Subiaco delivered the best game of their season against Peel in Round Four and it revolved around clean disposal and execution. Defenders Wayde Twomey, Aaron Heal and Braden Fimmano displayed excellent run and ball use against the Thunder and it generated space and freedom for the midfield. The link up play through the middle by Phelan, Horsley and Delahunty created a host of excellent chances for forwards and they happily converted a host of well executed team passages.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Subiaco claimed a 22-point victory over East Perth in Round 21, 2016. Liam Ryan kicked four goals and Kyal Horsley was named best on ground with 34 touches and 12 inside 50’s.
