PREVIEW: Round 22 v West Perth

The Lions are back in business for Round 22 with a massive clash against West Perth for the Imagine Vincent match.

Subiaco (1st) had a bye the week before and will be well rested to take on the Falcons (6th). West Perth narrowly defeated East Fremantle at HBF Arena the week before by 13 points to keep their finals chances alive.

Subi have already secured top spot but will want to generate momentum as the finals approach. The Falcons are on the bubble of the post-season equation and will provide a fitting challenge as they face elimination with a loss.

A massive battle in the middle looms with Leigh Kitchin and Adam Cockie hitting career best form. The two midfielders were amongst the best in a side that dismantled 3rd placed Swan Districts in Round 20.

The Falcons also possess potent midfielders with Aaron Black, Shane Nelson and Trent Manzone ranking in the top 20 for disposals. They also were buoyed by the return of Andrew Strijk last week. The Falcons won the disposals count with 355 against the Sharks but struggled to convert their possession into points with a conversion rate of 34%.

TALKING POINTS

THE STRAIGHTEST KICK WINS

Subiaco and West Perth are the most inaccurate teams in the league in regards to goal kicking accuracy in 2017 with the Lions converting at 51% and the Falcons at 46%. Wayward kicking fortunately hasn’t hurt the Maroons to date, but they would like to see a upward increase in the percentage as the season reaches its. The team which kicks the straightest will have the advantage in this one.

SUBLIME RYAN

The Lions forward personnel have taken a battering over the back half of the season with Clancy Wheeler and Liam Baker going down with injury, but leading goal-kicker Liam Ryan has picked up the slack. Wheeler and Baker have been absent since Round 16 but since then Ryan has kicked 19 goals from five games to soar away as the WAFL’s leading goal-kicker. The likes of Ben Sokol, Max Walters and Lachlan Delahunty have provided supporting roles but the high-flying goal-kicker has thrived with the responsibility as the #1 forward.

IMAGINE VINCENT

The Subiaco Football Club are celebrating their relationship with the City of Vincent with the Imagine Vincent match. The Lions have been a massive part of the local Leederville community since 2004 and are dedicating the day to their relationship with the council. The first ever game of football to be played at Leederville Oval was Subiaco vs West Perth in 1915 so this Round 22 clash is fitting.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Subiaco met West Perth in Round 15 in torrential conditions at HBF Arena. The water logged deck made for the lowest scoring game of the year, with Subi claiming the victory 6.11 (47) to 4.12 (36).
