MEMORY LANE - Second Semi Final Memories

Subiaco will play off for a place in the 2017 WAFL Grand Final this coming Sunday when they play in the WAFL 2nd Semi Final.

This will be the 33rd time that Subiaco has played in a second semi-final and these are some of the best memories of those previous matches diving down memory lane.

1914: Subiaco 8.18 d East Fremantle 3.7
Subiaco’s quest for a three-peat in 1914 got off to a perfect start with an upset win over East Fremantle in the 1914 second semi-final, the first time the club had played in a second semi-final. After finishing on top of the ladder in 1912 and 1913 before going on to win the premiership, Subiaco had to settle for fourth going into the 1914 finals. Forced to match up with the top of the ladder East Fremantle, Subiaco produced a dominant display, starting strongly with four goals to one and finishing strongly with two goals to nil, recording a 41-point win.

1935: Subiaco 13.9 d West Perth 9.17
The rivalry between Subiaco and West Perth produced many great battles and upsets and the second semi-final of 1935 was one of these. West Perth had finished on top of the ladder in 1935 and looked to be on their way to victory leading Subiaco by nine points at three quarter time. However an offensive explosion by Subiaco as they kicked eight goals in the last quarter saw them produce a memorable come from behind win. Stewart Daily kicked three goals with leading goal kicker of the era Jack Jennings also kicking two.

2003: Subiaco 12.8 d West Perth 11.6
It would take Subiaco another 68 years to win a second semi-final as the Lions suffered 10-straight second semi-final defeats. The drought was finally broken with a memorable win over great rival West Perth in 2003. In an absorbing battle, not much separated the two teams all day long with Subiaco finding their way to the front at every break. In a tense final quarter it was Subiaco who kicked the pivotal goals and held on grimly for a hard fought eight point win. Brad Smith and Luke Toia each kicked three goals in the win.

2006: Subiaco 15.7 d South Fremantle 12.18
After finishing top of the WAFL in 2006, Subiaco hosted their first home second semi-final at their new base at Leederville Oval. After a close first half South Fremantle took control in the third quarter and had built what seemed a match-winning 19 point three quarter time lead. Showing the fight, character and grit that would define the Golden Era of the club, Subiaco stormed back in the last quarter with a memorable final quarter comeback. Subiaco kicked seven goals to two, taking the lead late in the fourth and holding on for a stunning win. Ali Pickett was instrumental with four goals among 20-possessions with Matt Priddis and Jarrod Schofield also outstanding, combining for 60-possessions.

2008: Subiaco 17.12 d West Perth 10.10
Subiaco had put together the best season in their history winning 19-games in 2008. The completion of a club first three-peat was sown with a dominant display in the second semi-final as Subiaco jumped rivals West Perth and powered away to a dominant win. 10 goals to 2 in the first half set up the win with Chad Cossom kicking three goals in an even team display that defined the 2008 squad. Shaun Hildebrant had 28 possessions while Jarrod Schofield was again influential with 20-possessions, 10-marks and two goals.

2016: Subiaco 14.12 d South Fremantle 9.2
Subiaco’s most recent second semi-final win came just 12 months ago as the Lions accounted for South Fremantle by 40 points. After being the two powerhouse sides of 2016, the Lions and Bulldogs played out a hotly contested second semi-final. An even first half was broken up just before half time by Liam Ryan before Subiaco made the decisive break with a six-goal to one third quarter setting up a comfortable win. Ryan was the difference maker finishing with 4.4 while Clancy Wheeler also kicked three goals among 18-possessions and 12-hit-outs. Leigh Kitchin was everywhere with 35 possessions while skipper Kyal Horsley had 22-possessions and laid nine-tackles.
