D-LEAGUE PREVIEW - 2nd Semi V South Fremantle

Subiaco’s Development League team will contest the 2017 WAFL Reserves Second Semi Final with a highly anticipated contest against South Fremantle on Sunday.

Subiaco go into Sunday’s semi-final riding a three game win streak and buoyed with confidence having upset Claremont in last week’s Qualifying Final.

With the Subiaco League team still contesting finals, the position for spots in the league team has helped drive strong team displays at D-League level with both grades now in a strong position to capitilise and win through to the 2017 WAFL Grand Final.

Subiaco will go into an early start second semi-final as underdogs with South Fremantle being the dominant team at WAFL reserves level having won an additional five games to Subiaco. However as they performed as underdogs last week expect the Subiaco side to come out strongly as they look to produce a second straight upset win.

TALKING POINTS

SEASON SPLIT
Subiaco and South Fremantle split their home and away season matches at one a piece during 2017. Subiaco had a narrow one point win at Fremantle Oval in round one, before falling to South Fremantle by 29 points in round nine. That second clash was notable for Subiaco conceding 11 goals during the third quarter, which ultimately cost them a chance at victory. Expect a stronger defensive showing in finals from the Lions.

LONG TIME BETWEEN CONTESTS
Due to a quirk in the fixture, Subiaco and South Fremantle has not battled since round nine, back at the start of May. The Subiaco D-League team has rapidly evolved and developed across the second half of the season and it would be expected that Subiaco has 11 different faces from that last match on Sunday.

MILLER TIME
Youngster Jacob Miller will look to continue an impressive streak during Sunday’s game. Miller is the only Lion to play in all 21 Subiaco D-League games during 2017 and when you consider he played eight straight games after debuting last season, this will make it 30 consecutive matches to start his career at D-League level for Miller.

LEACH EFFECT
Daniel Leach has become one of the most consistent midfielders of the Subiaco D-League team in the second half of the season. Leach had picked up at least 20 possessions in nine of his last 10 games heading into finals. He was down a little bit on input with only 14 possessions last week and expect the tough midfielder to have a strong impact on Sunday.

HANDY GOALS
South Fremantle has been a strong offensive team this year, but Subiaco certainly has the firepower up front to match. Dylan Nelson and Ryan Vermeersch have each kicked over 30 goals for the season and loom as the most important forward duo for Subiaco on Sunday.

FINAL TEAM
Much like the Subiaco League team, the makeup of the D-League team will likely not be decided until late in the weekend. With players like Matthew Bogesnperger, Michael Braut and Jack Beverley all looking to return from injury and a host of players in line for league elevation, it could be a different looking squad from last week when Subiaco takes the field early Sunday morning.
