PREVIEW - Preliminary Final (2017) V South Fremantle

The season goes on the line for Subiaco this coming Sunday as the Lions look to progress to the 2017 WAFL Grand Final with victory over South Fremantle in what looms as a blockbuster Preliminary Final match.
The stakes could not be any higher for both teams in this match; win and go on to contest a Grand Final against Peel; lose and go home for 2017.
After being the two standout teams of the 2017 season, many pundits expected that Subiaco and South Fremantle would contest the Grand Final. Instead the two teams will do battle a week earlier with a Grand Final spot on the line.
Subiaco had taken all before them in the home and away season powering to the minor premiership, however as can often be the case, the intensity and pressure lifted in Subiaco’s first final last week and they took too long to match the intent of their opponents.
Subiaco midfielder Corey Adamson spoke to “The WAFL Show” during the week and reiterated the importance of playing Subiaco’s way on Sunday.
“We’ve got to limit South Fremantle’s guys and then we’ve got to do damage going forward,” Adamson said.
“We were a bit too defensive last weekend and we’ve got to play a Subiaco brand of footy and try and score as well.”
THE 1 IN 19-1
Subiaco do not need much reminding of what a dangerous side South Fremantle can be. It was South Fremantle that inflicted Subiaco’s only defeat during the home and away season back in round one. Now looking back, that loss was the blemish against a perfect home and away season for Subiaco.
Quite remarkably Subiaco and South Fremantle are locked at 204 points apiece through their two battles in the home and away season. South Fremantle won the first battle by 39 points in round one before Subiaco turned the tables with a 39 point win in round nine. Due to a quirk in the fixture it will have been over four months since their last battle come Sunday’s Preliminary Final.
It looms as an unstoppable force versus an immovable object in Sunday’s game. Subiaco’s lock down number one defence will be tested by the firepower of South Fremantle’s number one offence. After having their collective colours lowered in the Second Semi Final last week, Subiaco’s defence will be looking for a rebound effort against the Bulldogs.
If the two earlier battles between the two sides are to be an indicator, this match will be decided by the contested ball dictating the game. Both teams have had strong performances against the other backed by a dominance at being able to win the hard ball. Again this was an area that Subiaco was down in last week, do not expect the Subiaco midfield to be beaten twice in succession with so much at stake.
Both Subiaco and South Fremantle has suffered finals defeats at the hand of Peel in 2016 and 2017. Regardless of who takes out the Preliminary Final, both teams will be hungry to make amends and take down rival Peel on Grand Final day. Subiaco will be of the strong belief that a fast start in the Preliminary Final and a fast start on Grand Final day could be pivotal to claiming the 2017 WAFL Premiership.
