Former Subiaco Players Set to Fly in AFL Season 2018

Thursday, March 22, 2018 - 9:36 PM

The 2018 AFL season commences this weekend and a host of former Subiaco players are set to play an impact on the 2018 AFL season.

After electrifying Leederville Oval crowds for the past two seasons, high flying, mercurial forward Liam Ryan has been named to make his AFL debut for West Coast at the first game at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

Ryan could be joined in the side by another Lion recruit with Brayden Ainsworth on an extended bench and in with a strong chance of debuting in round one.

Through pre-season Ryan has impressed with his goal sense and an ongoing improvement towards his defensive efforts, while Ainsworth has continued to show promise as a ball winner at the elite level.

There could be three former Lions playing for West Coast on Sunday, with Dom Sheed having established himself as a regular in the Eagles side over the past two seasons playing his 50th AFL game in 2017 and now a 60-game AFL player.

Meanwhile on the opposing side, former Subiaco big man, Callum Sinclair will lead the Sydney ruck division. Sinclair has played 35 games for Sydney after crossing from West Coast in 2016, having played 29 games for the Eagles between 2013 and 2015.

At Geelong, Sam Menegola is part of a strong midfield group that appears set to be the benchmark of AFL clubs this season. Menegola has blossomed into an important piece of the Geelong midfield having played 30 games including 22 games last year. Menegola finished the season strongly, picking up six Brownlow votes in the last four games of the year.

With the retirement of Matt Priddis last season, the longest tenured AFL player recruited from Subiaco still in the AFL, is Brisbane veteran Daniel Rich. Rich passed 150 games at Brisbane last year having now played in 165 AFL games after debuting in 2009.

The other three players on an AFL list who hailed from Subiaco are draftees from last season with Kyron Hayden at North Melbourne with Ben Miller and Liam Baker on the list at defending premiers Richmond.

Subiaco wishes all its former products the best at AFL level in 2018.
