Monday, June 18, 2018 - 11:55 AM

Subiaco’s Colts and Reserves helped make it a perfect three for three for Subiaco for the second straight week as both made leaps up their respective ladders.

Subiaco’s Reserves jumped up to second on the ladder, while the Colts moved back inside the Colts top three after 11 rounds of the WAFL season.

RESERVES RECAP

A gutsy fourth quarter performance helped Subiaco’s Reserves make it four straight wins, as they defeated co-tenant rivals East Perth by 32 points.

In a see-sawing match, Subiaco found themselves trailing by a point at the 10 minute mark of the last quarter, but then slammed on the last five goals of the game inside 15 minutes to record a hard fought win.

Hard working inside midfielders Travis Cleggett and Daniel Leach were the catalysts of the win with Cleggett collecting 27 possessions and Leach 26 possessions.

In another even spread across the forwards, Ryan Borchet, Aaron Breman and Thomas Edwards-Baldwin each kicked two goals as Subiaco had nine goal kickers on the day.

The Subiaco defence was also very good, holding East Perth to just six goals for the game with youngsters Ben Reid, Jacob Atkinson and Max Dennis all having an important impact on the contest.

Subiaco take on seventh placed Swan Districts next week as they look to extend their current winning streak to five games.

GAME CHANGERS

OUTSTANDING D CONTINUES

Defence has been the catalyst for this four game winning run, conceding just 28 goals at an average of just seven goals a game in the past four games. Youngster Ben Reid is pressing for a league debut, as one of the prime movers of the Subiaco backline, but it has been an overall strong performance from Subiaco’s back group.

CLEGGETT STEPS UP

Collie recruit Travis Cleggett has made a successful start to his Subiaco career, but had yet to have the big possession game which made him a force in country football. That game came Saturday, as the midfielder started strongly and had an important impact in the late run. Cleggett smashed his previous record with a career high 27 possessions.

HARD HITTING COCKIE DOES IT AGAIN

A week after a seven tackle return to footy, Subiaco hard nut Adam Cockie did it again, laying a bone crunching nine tackles. Cockie kicked the games first goal and finished with 23 possessions to go with the nine tackles as he continues to build towards a league recall.

RUCK DOMINANCE

For the first time this year, Subiaco was able to play a three pronged ruck attack, with Jack Fletcher, Andy Doyle and a returning Tim Sutherland splitting time in the ruck. Sutherland finished with 35 hitouts while Doyle had 19 and Fletcher 16. All three each kicked a goal showing this trio can prove a threat in the middle and up forward.

HYPHEN’S FORM CONTINUES

Alongside Reid, Thomas Edwards-Baldwin was also named in the 25 last week, indicating the graduating colt of 2017 is in the mix for a league debut. Edwards-Baldwin had another solid game, showing an ability to hit the scoreboard with two goals. This ability to impact forward of centre will be an important feature as Edwards-Baldwin continues to develop.

Though East Perth did outscore Subiaco five goals to two in the third quarter, Subiaco rallied in the final term, re-establishing the 47 point winning margin.

Tristan Hobley led the way for the Lions with 32 possessions, while State 18 representative Luke Foley showed his class with 27 possessions and nine tackles.

12 BEHINDS… IN A QUARTER

This time it was Tristan Hobley who passed 30 touches. Hobley was outstanding early as Subiaco built there match winning lead and ended with a career high 32 possessions.

DEFENCE SETS UP THE WIN

This win was highlighted by the defensive first half effort as Subiaco held East Perth goalless. Josh Leunig continued to impress in a key defensive role, while leaders Madoc Plane and Duane Oxenham-Smith also produced strong first halves.

STATE 18’S FEATURE STRONGLY

A week off from State duty was Subiaco’s gain on Saturday as Luke Foley, Will Hickmott and Xavier Peacock all had an influence. Foley and Hickmott gathered 51 possessions, with Foley also driving the ball inside fifty 10 times and adding nine tackles.
