By The Numbers - Round 11, 2018

Wednesday, June 20, 2018 - 9:19 AM

Subiaco won their ninth game to start the 2018 season with a hard fought win over co-tenant rivals East Perth.

Subiaco led from start to finish as they continued to amass some big numbers relating to possessions and forward 50 entries.

These are some of the key numbers behind the latest Subiaco win.

5

POSSESSION LEADER – Captain Kyal Horsley’s form over the past two months has been irresistible. Though he was well held in the first half, Horsley bounced back in the second to again lead Subiaco in possessions, the fifth straight time he has done so. Horsley has possession totals of 40, 41, 33, 37 and 29 in that streak and is now averaging 34 possessions a game in 2018.

8

INSIDE 50’s – Subiaco had 65 inside 50 entries on Saturday with small defender Hayden Kennedy having the most for the Lions with eight. In the past two weeks Kennedy has had 14 forward 50 entries further highlighting the expansion in his offensive output for Subiaco.

9

TACKLES – Dynamic mid sized forward Rhys Waters finished with nine tackles on Saturday, the most he has had in a game since 2013. Waters forward pressure was one of the features of Subiaco’s win over East Perth on Saturday.

10

CONSECUTIVE WINS – Subiaco beat East Perth for the 10th straight time on Saturday. The current streak dates back to 2015 and is the longest run since 1988 when Subiaco beat East Perth in 12 straight between 1985 and 1988. The average winning margin in that run has been 53 points for the Lions.

17

SECOND HALF QUARTER WINS – Heading into the last quarter of Saturday’s game, Subiaco had won 17 of 17 last half quarters in 2018. That streak was snapped as East Perth finished stronger with a five goal to two final quarter. It was Subiaco’s first second half loss of the season as East Perth outscored Subiaco by four points after the main break.

40

FORWARD EFFICIENCY – Subiaco has been flirting with an unprecedented 60% efficiency going forward in 2018. They were unable to maintain that heady stat on Saturday as a mixture of strong East Perth defensive structures and inability to convert by the forwards meant Subiaco recorded a season low 40% forward efficiency.

42

FORWARD CONVERSION – Likewise Subiaco’s forward accuracy has taken a hit in the past two weeks. After kicking more goals than points in their first seven games, Subiaco has dipped below 50% in their last two weeks. On Saturday they converted at just 42% of their scoring shots.

45

CLEARANCES – The change in Subiaco’s ruck division in 2018 has assisted with the midfield extending their advantage as a clearance team. At the weekend Subiaco had 45 clearances as opposed to East Perth’s 29. This ability to get first hand on the ball was another key behind the win.

165

CONTESTED BALL – In what was a tight physical contest, Subiaco’s plus 29 in contested ball was a pivotal battle of the match. The Subiaco players willingness to win the hard and contested ball all over the field was a notable feature of the win.

2350

GAMES – Saturday marked the historic 2350th game of the Subiaco Lions. Following the win Subiaco has won 1076 games, lost 1256 and had 16 draws. This equates to a winning percentage of 46%. The highest point Subiaco’s win percentage has ever been since 1901.
