By The Numbers - Round 15, 2018

Wednesday, July 18, 2018 - 8:58 AM

Subiaco had another big win in their top of the table battle with South Fremantle last Saturday, eventually running out 58 point winners.

It was a historic day for Subiaco, breaking a 70 year old record, while the wet weather conditions made for a host of big contested and tackle numbers.

Add in statistical quirks for Leigh Kitchin, Lachlan Delahunty, Greg Clark, Chris Phelan and Ben Sokol and it was another big week of numbers for Subiaco.

As Ross Lyon said on Sunday, there are numbers, and there are numbers… Then there is Subiaco’s “By the Numbers”.

1

CLARK – Subiaco defender Greg Clark kicked his first goal at Leederville Oval on Saturday. In an interesting quirk, Clark had kicked two goals from five games at Rushton Park, yet had never kicked a goal in 22 games at Leederville Oval. That changed late in the second quarter when he made the most of a goal kicking opportunity with his second goal of the season.

5

CONTESTED MARKS – Lachlan Delahunty took a career high five contested marks in the win, showing his class despite the wet conditions. Finishing the match with 11 marks in total, Delahunty sits second for marks in the WAFL competition. Delahunty has continued to improve his contested marking as indicated in his performance at the weekend.

6

WINNING MARGIN – Despite Subiaco and South Fremantle being the two top teams of the last three home and away seasons, they are yet to produce a classic battle. The last six matches have all been decided by more than five goals, with the closest battle in the past six being 32 points.

7

GOALS – Across all three grades Subiaco conceded just seven goals for the day against South Fremantle. The league and colts each conceded three goals while the reserves conceded only one with a trio of great team defensive performances across the day.

13

PHELAN – Subiaco midfielder Chris Phelan produced a career best 13 tackles in the win. Prior to Saturday, Phelan’s career high was 12 tackles in a 2016 loss against Perth. Phelan was at the coalface on Saturday, putting in the heavy work in the midfield to keep Subiaco with the ascendancy.

23

KITCHIN – Subiaco’s reigning Outridge Medal winner had 23 possessions on Saturday. After failing to hit 20 possessions in the first two games of the year, Kitchin has now rolled off 11 straight 20 possession games, recapturing the form of his 2017 Outridge Medal season.

25

RED TIME SCORE – Subiaco held a decisive sway in red-time of Saturday’s win, finishing plus 25 in this area. Subiaco kicked 4.6 while South Fremantle could muster only 0.5 in time on across the four quarters.

28

SCORE – Subiaco held South Fremantle to their lowest score since 2004 in the victory. The final score of 3.10 the lowest score since the Bulldogs kicked 3.4 against East Perth back in 2004. It was the second week in succession that Subiaco had held a team under 30 points in a game, with this the first time that Subiaco have achieved that feat since 1999.

32

HOME & AWAY WINS – Subiaco’s 13th win to start 2018, following on from 19 wins to end the 2017 Home & Away season, means Subiaco passed East Fremantle’s previously held record of 31 consecutive Home & Away season wins. This new Subiaco record rewrites a record that had stood for over 70 years dating back to 1947.

46

KICKING EFFICIENCY – Subiaco’s outstanding pressure around the ball and on the ball carrier forced a usually skilful South Fremantle side into a season low kicking efficiency of just 46%. By comparison, Subiaco handled the pressure reasonably well, finishing the game with a kicking efficiency of 55%.

59

INSIDE 50S – Subiaco finished the game plus 25 in the inside 50 count, winning the battle 59 to 34. It was Subiaco’s ability to move the ball more cleanly heading towards fifty that was a key decider in the final outcome.

90

TACKLES – Subiaco has been one of the lowest tackling sides in the WAFL in 2018, yet produced their heaviest tackle count of 2018 in the wet against South Fremantle on Saturday. It marks two consecutive weeks were Subiaco has registered a season high in tackle counts.

100

MARKS – Subiaco took the most marks across the WAFL on a wet Saturday, finishing the game with 100 marks. It was the sixth time this season that Subiaco has recorded a triple figure mark tally.

101

SOKOL – Subiaco forward Ben Sokol recorded 11 marks in Saturday’s win and now has a WAFL league leading best 101 marks on the season. It was the fourth time this year that Sokol has recorded double digit figures for marks.
