Saturday, August 18, 2018 - 9:30 PM

Subiaco continued on their path towards the 2018 WAFL Finals with a comprehensive 91 point victory over East Fremantle in WAFL Round 20 action.

After conceding the first goal of the game, Subiaco quickly answered and was never threatened from there as they extended their lead in every quarter in a complete four quarter performance.

Subiaco kicked nine unanswered goals across the first and second quarter to build a 50 point half time break, than added the final four goals of the game unanswered in taking the big win.

Spending more time forward in the second half, Zac Clarke added three third quarter goals finishing with a game high four goals for the Lions.

Clancy Wheeler added two finals quarter goals to finish with three, while youngster Tom Edwards-Baldwin and big man Lachlan Delahunty also added three goals for Subiaco.

Hayden Kennedy led Subiaco in possessions with 34, giving strong rebound from behind, while Josh Deluca had a consistent four quarter performance to finish with 31 possessions.

Clarke followed up his four goals with 29 possessions, joined by Kyal Horsley on 29 with Justin Joyce having a season high 28 possessions and Leigh Kitchin also having 28.

Defensively, Subiaco was outstanding, holding East Fremantle to just six goals for the game and conceding less than 50 points for the ninth time this season.

The back group was ably led by Jordan Lockyer and Aaron Heal, with rebounding defenders Drew Rohde and Jacob Miller also giving great drive from the back half.

Subiaco faces their final game of the 2018 home and away season next Saturday when they play Perth at Leederville Oval.

Regardless of the result, Subiaco will have a first round finals bye before facing either South Fremantle or West Perth in the second semi final at Leederville Oval on Sunday September 9th.

GAME CHANGERS

ZAC. CLARKE. BOG.

Subiaco’s big man recruit has delivered throughout 2018 and produced his best game as a Lion on Saturday. At half time Clarke was on track for an unprecedented 35 possession, 50 hit-out game after he had collected 18 possessions and 26 hit-outs to half time. After dominating in the ruck the first half, Clarke drifted forward after half time and did just as much damage there with three third quarter goals. Clarke’s fitness and mobility has improved throughout the season and he showed this with some dashing runs when given space in the first half. Expect Clarke to be a crucial part of Subiaco’s arsenal come September.

HOT MIDFIELD START

Veteran midfielder Adam Cockie was everywhere in a scintillating first quarter where he gathered 12 possessions. Not to be outdone, Josh Deluca also picked up 12 possessions. With this duo having an impact around the contest and at the stoppages, Subiaco built a big first quarter lead, having 12 scoring shots to one at the first break.

MAKING IT COUNT IN TACKLES

While the possession output of Rowen Powell and Tom Edwards-Baldwin was not as high as some of their teammates, this duo laid a combined 17 tackles. Powell had a career high nine tackles while Edwards-Baldwin had a career high with eight. The pressure that they applied through the midfield and half forward was instrumental in the turnovers that Subiaco were able to create.

HANDBALL HAPPY

The past two weeks Subiaco has past 200 handballs in a match. After 207 last week, they added another 204 against East Fremantle. Captain Kyal Horsley was the main driver of this happy handball day, finishing with 21 handballs while midfield teammate Josh Deluca had 18.

FORWARD DRIVE

Subiaco passed 60 inside 50 entries for the seventh time this year, with Hayden Kennedy and Justin Joyce leading the side in forward entries. Kennedy finished with nine entries while Joyce highlighted his ability to link defence with attack, having eight entries in his best game of the season so far.

PERFECT 9-0 AWAY SEASON

Subiaco achieved a milestone on Saturday, completing the club’s first ever perfect away season. Having come close with one loss away seasons on multiple occasions, this was the first Subiaco team to complete a clean sweep of road games. In order this year away from home Subiaco has beaten South Fremantle in Round Two, Peel in Round Seven, Perth in Round Eight, Swan Districts in Round 12, Claremont in Round 17, East Fremantle in Round 20 and West Perth in Round 13 and 19.
