Monday, August 20, 2018 - 7:39 AM

Subiaco’s colts claimed a historic minor premiership, while the Subiaco reserves moved one win away from achieving a club clean sweep of minor premierships after each side recorded wins in minor grade action on Saturday.

The Colts won a highly anticipated top three battle while the Reserves had a big win over their East Fremantle opponents.

COLTS RECAP

The Subiaco Colts claimed just the third minor premiership in the club’s long history, after a 13 point win over East Fremantle early on Saturday.

The win which pushed the Colts current win streak to double digits, at 10, was on the back of another all-round team performance.

Subiaco produced a match winning first half burst, leading by 40 points at half time, before holding strong against a second half East Fremantle fightback.

Liam Hickmott led Subiaco with 29 possessions while Taj Schofield and Tristan Hobley each had 27 possessions with Matthew Pannell adding 26 possessions and nine marks.

Ben Golding was the only multiple goal kicker for Subiaco adding two gaols.

Defensively Subiaco were again outstanding led by captain Madoc Plane and Josh Leunig.

Subiaco will have their last hit-out before a first week finals bye next Saturday at Leederville Oval against Perth.

GAME CHANGERS

GREAT SEASON GETS FIRST REWARD

The hard work and dedication of Subiaco’s Colts, Coaches and Support Staff produced its first significant reward, with the club’s third Colts Minor Premiership. Previously Subiaco had only won WAFL Colts Minor Premierships in 1981 and 1988. Saturday marked the end of a 30 year drought for Subiaco’s Colts.

SPREAD THE GOALS

Subiaco took control of the game in the first half building a 40 point half time lead on the back of some outstanding work around the stoppages. Up forward the load was spread in a pleasing side for coach Beau Wardman. Seven individuals had goals at half time while by the end of the game Subiaco had recorded eight individual goal scorers.

SONS OF GUNS AGAIN

All season the trio of Wil and Liam Hickmott along with Taj Schofield have played pivotal roles in Subiaco’s quest to the minor premiership. On the weekend all three were crucial again. Schofield had a career high 27 touches, while Liam Hickmott continued his outstanding second half of the year with 29 possessions and nine tackles.

SETTING A STANDARD AGAIN

Another one of Subiaco’s key traits across the 2018 season has been a ferocious thirst to hunt opposition players. Subiaco finished with 80 tackles to East Fremantle’s 71 tackles on the game. Setting the standard in the first quarter was Kyle Stainsby who had six tackles in the first alone and finished with 10 tackles.

FINAL

SUBIACO                     3.3       7.8       8.11     9.13.67

EAST FREMANTLE      0.1       1.4       3.6       7.12.54

RESERVES RECAP

Subiaco’s Reserves had their second big win in succession, coasting to an 85 point win over East Fremantle at East Fremantle Oval.

The big win was set up with a second quarter onslaught that saw the Lions kick 6.5 to nil, building a 54 point half time advantage.

After an even third quarter, Subiaco had another big last quarter with six goals to one, posting their highest score of the season, reaching 20 goals for the first time this year.

Travis Cleggett and Ray Daniels led Subiaco with 23 possessions apiece with Daniel Leach finishing with 22 possessions and Michael Braut and James Eccles each having 20.

Up forward Daniels led the way with four goals, matched by David Ehlers with four and Christian Martin had three majors.

The win by Subiaco’s Reserves keeps them firm at the top of the WAFL Reserves Ladder, though they must beat Perth next week to assure themselves the minor premiership and straight passage to the second semi final.

GAME CHANGERS

TOP SCORE BACK TO BACK

For the second straight week, Subiaco’s Reserves posted their highest score of the season. After scoring 126 points against West Perth last week, they went bigger on Saturday, finishing with 130 points. The ability to hit the scoreboard has been one of the big standouts of the Reserves side over the past six weeks, showing an improved efficiency forward of centre.

BRADLEY BEST ON

Sean Bradley mixed some time forward and in the ruck and was Subiaco’s best in the big win. He reeled in five contested marks, nine marks in total, added a goal and was a consistent performer across the four quarters. Bradley and ruck tandem Tim Sutherland helped lead Subiaco to a big 65 to 21 advantage in hitouts.

CAREER BEST EHLERS

The versatile David Ehlers again continued to impress, this time adding a career best four goals in one of his best showings of the year. Ehlers collected seven marks to be a dangerous option inside fifty, as was Ray Daniels who also kicked four.

COMPLETE STATISTICAL DOMINANCE

The numbers behind Subiaco’s win indicate the dominance of the victory. Subiaco finished plus 42 on handballs, plus 67 on kicks, plus 109 on possessions, plus 57 on marks, plus 44 on hit-outs and had 30 scoring shots to 10. Subiaco’s ability to put together four quarters of ruthless football was an important sign just two weeks away from finals.
