Twomey Ready to Swoop
- Wednesday, 30 April 2014
Lions recruit Wayde Twomey admits he’ll feel a little odd when he lines up against his former teammates in Saturday’s top of the table clash with Swan Districts at Medibank Stadium..
The 28-year-old played 98 games for Swans including the 2010 WAFL Grand Final.
“Swan Districts Football Club still means a hell of a lot to me to be honest, it’s a club that gave me the opportunity to play WAFL footy.
“I won a flag there and they were instrumental in helping me get drafted into the AFL.” Twomey said.
Last year’s state game Simpson medalist, Twomey headlined Subiaco’s best offseason recruiting campaign in more than a decade.
Lachlan Delahunty, Matt Boland, Joel Latham Frank Stockley, Shaun Hildebrandt and Shane Yarran all landed at the Lions den and along with Twomey have played critical roles in Subiaco’s stunning undefeated start to 2014.
Like the Lions, Twomey’s former club has also surprised a lot of so-called WAFL ‘experts’.
Swans sit second on the WAFL ladder with 4 wins from their first five games despite being tipped by many to claim this season’s wooden spoon.
“No it doesn’t surprise me that they are second on the ladder, they still have a lot of quality on that list and some of the kids who needed to stand up have done that.
“As long as they don’t beat us I hope they keep winning.” Twomey said.
“I’m a very competitive person so I don’t like to loose ever. If it’s Swan Districts or a game a scrabble I’m not playing to loose.”
Twomey has maintained friendships with a number of his former teammates, in particular Swans’ spearhead Tim Geappen.
“Yeah no doubt I’ll speak to Swoop a couple of times in the lead up to Saturday, he’s one of the chirpiest guys on that team so I’m expecting some banter and I’ll dish it straight back, we’ll have a bit of fun with it I’m sure.” Twomey said.
“I wont be nervous I don’t think but it will be an interesting feeling playing against some of my best mates who I’ve played with for half a decade.
“But after the first five minutes it will be business as usual.” Twomey said.
