Resting Lions

Subiaco will use the bye-week to monitor the health of the playing group with several players expected to return in the near future.

Strength and conditioning coach Jackson Dennis believes the break presents itself as an opportunity to monitor the individuals and get them ready for Round Seven.

“Some of the guys are using this week to add extra run and conditioning and some of the guys are using the time to manage soreness or injury,

“The week will be tailored to the individual needs of the player and their current health levels.” Said Dennis

The Lions have boosted to the bye week at 4-1 despite missing a host of key players.

Captain Kyal Horsley has been missing due to soreness; midfielders Sam Menegola and Reece Blechynden are managing long-term injuries as well as forwards Matt Boland, Chris Deluca and Lachlan Delahunty.

But Dennis was happy to acknowledge a handful were chances to return in Round Seven against Perth.

“Our injury list is structured to manage the injuries and set comeback goals for the players,

“We track injured players with a predicted return date and Round Seven was a target for a lot of these guys. Players like Kyal Horsley, Chris Deluca and Matt Boland have worked through their recovery regiments and are close to being on the park.” Said Dennis

Premiership forwards Deluca and Boland are yet to play this year but Dennis emphasises that conservative is always the best approach.

“You don’t want to push guys into game play before their ready. On a fitness level you probably could have played a couple of the guys weeks ago but the goal is to make sure they’re 100%.

The season is long, and so far we’ve been able to cover with our depth so there’s no use in rushing players back. You want to make sure you can run deep into the season” Said Dennis

Premiership half-back Wayde Twomey works through his conditioning program

An intra-club match could be the perfect opportunity for the injury-hampered Lions to gain match fitness; with Subiaco’s seniors going head-to-head on Friday

“We’ll use the time off to have a intra club match as well. This will give an opportunity for the guys who have had disrupted pre-seasons to build some match fitness and hopefully get back into the swing of playing before Round Seven.”
