WAFLW: Match Preview vs Peel Thunder - Round 1 2022

Wednesday, February 16, 2022 - 5:50 PM by Matt Paddick

Subiaco Lions will find out where the team is at from the very start of the WAFLW season, when they take on reigning premiers Peel Thunder at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday, February 19 at 5:30pm.

In a tough challenge under lights, the Lions will look to assert their authority early on in the season against a quality opponent.

Coach Michael Farmer said the two sides have had some good clashes in the past, but it’s important for the Lions to play their own brand of football in what will be an exciting contest.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Subiaco proved they were a force to be reckoned with, taking a 15-point victory over the Thunder at Leederville Oval in Round 13 of last season.

In what was one of their best wins of the season, the backline led the way, conceding just two goals for the match.

The victory was part of a winning streak which saw the side win six of their last seven games to storm into the finals.

ONE TO WATCH

Midfield bull Abbey Dowrick set the WAFLW on fire last season, with her strong attack on the football and her ability to win the contest.

Her superb season was good enough to be voted equal fairest and best in the Dhara Kerr Award, but was ineligible due to suspension.

Head coach Michael Farmer said she’s one of the most exciting players in the competition, and with another pre-season under her belt, expects her to improve and impact games for longer.
