WAFLW: Lions go down to Bulldogs in clash under lights

Subiaco will head into the mid-season break with an aim to change the course of their season, following a 40-point loss to South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Friday April 8.

It was a first term blitz from the Bulldogs, who kicked five goals and kept Subiaco scoreless to help set up the 8.2 (50) to 1.4 (10) win.

The contest was a reverse of fortunes for both sides, with Subiaco having a dominant first quarter when the sides fought in round three.

Defender Clare McCarthy worked hard to and showed she’s up to the level as a key position in defence, while midfielder Madizen Wilkins impressed in the middle of the ground with 19 disposals and five tackles.

The Bulldogs came to play in the early parts of the match.

They dominated the first quarter, kicking 5.1 to lead by 31 points at the first break.

Subiaco were unable to get clean possession of the football early, with South Fremantle’s pressure paramount to their game style.

The controlled approach of the Lions fell apart at times, while the Bulldogs’ strategy of surging the ball forward with pace got them on top.

In the second quarter however, there were positive signs as the Lions were able to win the term on the scoreboard.

Although they conceded a goal early, Subiaco looked calmer with ball in hand and looked to use it with purpose.

Repeat inside 50s from Wilkins and the returning Amy Hunt turned up the pressure, before a Tess Lyons kick found Dahna Lee.

She converted the set shot, bringing down the margin to 29 points at half time.

It was a tough, competitive outing for both sides for the remainder of the contest.

While Subiaco’s effort and intensity was high, the Bulldogs were up for the challenge.

It was even for the majority of the term, but a lapse in concentration for the Lions’ defence led to a South Fremantle goal.

It became a difficult task for Subiaco, who trailed by 35 points at three quarter time.

The Lions had chances inside 50 in the final term, but ultimately the challenge was too great, with the side going down by 40 at the final siren.

Around the grounds, the Subiaco’s Rogers Cup side fought in a tight contest, but ultimately fell to East Perth by 5 points.

Following the bye, the Lions will be eager to get back on the winners list when they take on Claremont at Revo Fitness Stadium on Sunday April 24.
