Subiaco Announce 2018 Leadership Group
Subiaco Football Club is delighted to announce that Kyal Horsley will again captain the club in 2018 after being selected by his teammates as the man best suited to lead the club for the season ahead.
Horsley is a former premiership captain of Subiaco and finds himself a life member of the club after playing his 150th game in 2017.
To again be selected by his peers as the captain meant a lot for Horsley as he looks to lead the side one step further in 2018 after falling short over the past two years.
“It’s a huge honour to lead the group again, something I’m extremely proud of and humbled by,” Horsley said.
“I’ve been fortunate to have played with some great leaders and witness first hand how they deal with situations and techniques which has helped me develop as a leader and gave me a great understanding of what motivates and what develops good culture.”
While Horsley has an awareness that every season will present its challenges, he has faith in his leadership group to be able to provide the right level of leadership support to a young WAFL group.
“Regardless of what arises during the year we have a really professional group of leaders along with a coaching group and board who have been involved with football for a long time and are very good in situations which require a cool head and strong leadership,” Horsley said.
Horsley’s deputy will again be Leigh Kitchin in 2018 after the popular clubmen and reigning Outridge Medallist was another standout in the player voting for leaders at the club.
Since crossing to Subiaco three years ago, Kitchin has notched a 50 game milestone and developed into one of the premier midfielders of the WAFL competition. Kitchin’s work with the young midfielders in the Subiaco group has shown his commitment to his teammates and being a respected leader within the group.
The eight man leadership group is rounded out with veterans, distinguished and budding leaders with Lachlan Delahunty, Justin Joyce, Hayden Kennedy, Jordan Lockyer, Chris Phelan and Clancy Wheeler all selected.
One of the two new faces to the group and one of the most exciting appointments to the leadership group is Hayden Kennedy.
Kennedy’s ascension to the leadership group speaks strongly to the next group of leaders coming through at the Subiaco Football Club and Kennedy’s standing amongst what is a young WAFL list.
While Kennedy was surprised to be selected to the group, he was thrilled to be seen as a leader of the club.
“I probably wasn’t expecting to be included in the leadership group for a couple of years, but have always had a desire to lead amongst the boys,” Kennedy said.
“I’m looking forward to hopefully having an impact as a leader on and off field in 2018.”
The other first time member of the leadership group was Clancy Wheeler who after eight years with the club saw his promotion to the leadership group as a reward for the way in which he has developed his game over the past two to three years.
“It was probably something I needed to work on, being a leader to the young boys,” Wheeler said.
“To be voted to the leadership group is a huge honour and hopefully speaks to how I have developed as both a footballer and man.”
Meanwhile for the senior members of the leadership group, Chris Phelan, Justin Joyce, Lachlan Delahunty and Jordan Lockyer; they are all looking forward to working with a young playing group and offering an on-field extension of the coaches both educating on game plan and on the much revered Subiaco club culture.
The leadership group was a peer voted exercise with the eight members of the leadership group selected from a prospective batch of 15 leaders from the club.
