The Subiaco Reserves started their 2018 premiership defence with a stirring 21-point victory over East Perth on Friday at Leederville Oval.

Subiaco made a bright start to the contest kicking the games first goal and holding an 11 point lead at quarter time, further extending it into the second quarter.
However East Perth rallied either side of half time to take the lead and threaten to take control of the match.
In a strong showing of fight and resilience by the Subiaco Reserves though, they piled on six goals in the third quarter to build a comfortable three quarter time lead and were from there able to hold East Perth at bay despite a couple of flurries in the last quarter.
Next week will see a Grand Final rematch of 2017 as Subiaco take on last year’s fallen Grand Final foes South Fremantle.
GAME CHANGERS
DEVELOPING COLTS SHOW SIGNS OF WHAT’S TO COME
Subiaco’s ongoing commitment to developing the youth of its club and its district is showing tangilble benefits within the senior program. Subiaco had eight players debut for the club on Friday with five of those being players who had graduated through the Colts program. All five had a significant impact on the contest and highlight the work that has been done to give opportunities to local Subiaco district players by the current Subiaco senior coaching group.
HOSKO THE SKIPPER
Popular senior midfielder Craig Hoskins has had to work his way back through a pre-season injury, with his quest for League fitness coming in the Reserves in Round One. Hoskins was the appointed captain for the day and proved his importance as a leader of the side in the crucial middle stages of the game. Each time East Perth threatened to press and take control of the contest, Hoskins was in the Subiaco midfield to steady the ship in a promising display for senior coach Jarrad Schofield.
BROTHERLY ACT IN THE RUCK
Subiaco unveiled a new look ruck attack for Round One, with brothers Matt and David Elhers combining as ruckmen for the game. Though they were well beaten in hitouts, it was the brothers ability to follow up and add an extra number around the ground that was significant. David and Matt combined for 26 possessions and 13 marks, far exceeding their ruck opponents in these categories.
CAVEDON STARTS WITH A WIN
New Subiaco Reserves Coach Matt Cavedon has in a short time associated with the Subiaco Football Club proven to be a strong leader and coach. His positive attitude with a young group and ability to adapt in round one show two of the key traits of a successful coach. Cavedon was dually rewarded with a first up win on Good Friday.

After East Perth answered with the games second goal, Subiaco kicked the last three goals of the opening quarter through Georiades, West and Frost as the Lions started to grab control of the game.
The second quarter also started strongly for Subiaco as Mayo scored the first goal of the second quarter in the second minute.

GAME CHANGERS
THE BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION
Both Wil and Liam Hickmott have proven to be valuable contributors to the Subiaco midfield over the last twelve months. Liam won last year’s Taylor Medal, while Wil was selected in the State 17s squad, and both showed why they are highly rated against East Perth. Wil displayed his class on the outside, while Liam was burrowing into packs to win the clearances.
THE LONG 929 DAY WAIT
The last time Jack Mayo took to a football field was in 2014, when Subiaco took on East Perth. Since then, Mayo has had an unfortunate run with injury, but his return was outstanding. He gathered 17 possessions, recorded four inside 50s, won three hit-outs, took three marks and booted two goals in a dazzling display. An even more remarkable performance given that it has taken him 929 days to be back on the footy field.
NEW CAPTAIN; SAME LEAD FROM THE FRONT IN DEFENCE
Subiaco has had some excellent leaders in previous seasons and new Colts captain Madoc Plane looks set to be another one to add to the list. Stationed on the half-back line, Plane gathered 12 possessions, took six marks and laid six tackles in a strong performance. More telling of his leadership, was his visible on field helping to set up the defence of Subiaco on numerous occasions.
THE PREMIERSHIP QUARTER
The Colts put the foot down in the third quarter. They piled on seven goals to East Perth’s three and were up by 45 points at the final break. The margin was too difficult for the Royals to combat.
