Colts Make it 3 Straight Wins, as Reserves Suffer 2nd Straight Narrow Loss

Subiaco’s Colts made it three straight wins to commence 2018 and consolidated their spot at the top of the WAFL Colts ladder as an irresistible second half burst set up a 36 point win.

 

Subiaco held Swans goalless after the major break, kicking the last nine goals of the game, turning a 15 point deficit into a 36 point win as the side engineered a 51 point turnaround.

 

The win was led by the midfield dominance of the Hickmott brothers with Liam collecting 27 possessions and Will collecting 23 possessions.

 

Liam Hickmott was particularly important in the third quarter around the stoppages, as the young Lion helped turn the game with his ability to win the ball on the inside at the contest.

 

Taj Schofield had his best game at WAFL Colts level with 22 possessions while Tristan Hobley was also good with 21 possessions.

 

Up forward Jack Mayo kicked five goals to lead the way while Zane Shellabear-Healy continued his solid start to the season with two goals.

 

Xavier Peacock had 30 hitouts and Mach Deng gave a presence all day long finishing with 17 hitouts, nine possessions and three tackles to be one of the sides best players.

MAYO’S FIVE

Jack Mayo has continued to be a presence in the Subiaco Colts forward line all season and finished a nice day at the office with five goals on Saturday to be the game’s most influential forward. Mayo kicked the only two goals in the first quarter for Subiaco, than added one in the third and finished his day with two in the last.

 

SET SHOT ACCURACY

It was a clinical performance by the Subiaco Colts in front of goals as they kicked 11 of their 12 goals from set shots and finished with an impressive 11.2 from set shots at goal across the morning. A number of these shots were difficult chances from tight angles, but Subiaco’s young forwards were good enough to make the most of all forward opportunities.

 

CLEARANCE WORK

After trailing by 15 points early in the third quarter, Subiaco Colts were desperately needing a spark. They would get it through the Deng to Hickmott connection as the ruckman and rover combined for a number of crucial clearances as Subiaco began to arrest momentum in the third quarter.

 

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE

Subiaco’s young colts defence produced their best performance of the season so far, holding Swans goalless in the second half. Captain Madoc Plane again led from the front however was well served by Matt Pannell whose rebounding was a feature, Duane Oxenham-Smith, Caleb McKenna, Josh Leunig and Jake McKinnon.

Subiaco’s Reserves team have suffered a second straight narrow loss, as they were beaten by Swans by 10 points in an entertaining game.

 

Subiaco were left to rue both a slow start and disappointing third quarter, as Subiaco was outscored 11 goals to six in these two pivotal quarters.

 

Despite trailing by 31 points five minutes into the last quarter, Subiaco never gave up, fighting to the final siren as they threatened to pinch an unlikely victory pressing hard in the last 20 minutes of the game kicking the game’s final three goals.

 

As was the case a week earlier, it was not to be for Subiaco’s Reserves, as they didn’t quite have the composure in the closing moments to be able to engineer a victory.

 

Daniel Leach continued his stellar start to 2018 with 31 possessions leading the team in possessions for the second consecutive week. Fellow midfielders Craig Hoskins with 21 possessions and McKenzie Lawrence with 20 possessions gave Leach the most support in the middle.

 

Michael Braut also had a strong game finishing with 24 possessions and five marks meanwhile up forward Daniel Perkins was always threatening finishing with 1.3 from 18 possessions with seven marks.

 

The Ehlers brothers, Matt and David were the only multiple goal kickers on the day for Subiaco combining for five goals with Matt kicking two and David leading the way for the Lions with three.

 

GAME CHANGERS

 

USUAL SUSPECTS

It was a case of the same names fighting most fiercely for Subiaco in Round Three with Daniel Leach, McKenzie Lawrence and Michael Braut the sides three best players. Arguably this trio has been the best three in every game so far for the Subiaco Reserves as they continue to push their claims for league selection.

 

POSITIVE INSIDE 50 COUNT

There were a number of positive signs for Reserves Coach Matt Cavedon to take from the loss, with one of those being the high number of forward 50 entries his team generated. Subiaco recorded 54 Inside 50’s beating Swans by 17 in this category. However the forwards were unable to make the most of this statistical dominance.

 

POSITIVE TACKLE COUNT

Another area where Subiaco just held sway was in the tackle count where they held an edge by one. Braden Fimmano and Ray Daniels each laid six tackles while Travis Cleggett continued to show promising signs laying five tackles.

 

WHAT WIND

While there was no definitive breeze advantage on Saturday, to simply look at the scores would suggest there was. Subiaco outscored Swans 7.4 to 4.5 in quarters two and four, while Subiaco was outscored 11.3 to 6.6 in quarters one and three.
