Lawrence Set to Debut for Subiaco Against Perth
Subiaco’s McKenzie Lawrence is set to make his WAFL league debut in tomorrow’s Round Eight clash against Perth.
The 20-year old midfielder from local Subiaco District club Warwick-Greenwood has been a strong performer in the Subiaco Reserves over the past 18 months with his selection a reward for consistent performance during that time.
Lawrence moved to Perth in part to progress his football ambitions after spending his childhood in Darwin, where he played for local side Palmerston.
Lawrence is a Premiership Player of the Subiaco Football Club after playing in the 2017 Reserves premiership side and is a former Colts Captain of the club.
Lawrence has averaged over 16 possessions and five tackles a game in the reserves so far this season, playing a number of key roles in the midfield for the Lions.
This marks the fifth season involved with Subiaco after three years with the Subiaco Colts program in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Last year, his first full season in senior football, Lawrence played 23 matches, finishing tied for fourth in the Blakemore Medal for the Reserves Fairest & Best.
Lawrence is set to fill the midfield void with Ben Newton to miss the match with injury.
“It was a bit of a surprise, but really exciting to get the opportunity to debut,” Lawrence said.
“I can’t wait for the game to come around, get out there and hopefully just enjoy a win at the end of the day with the boys.”
In a somewhat ironic twist, Lawrence will debut against Perth, a club that has history with his family with his father Paul and his grandfather having represented the club previously.
“Dad will be pretty excited about Saturday I reckon,” Lawrence said.
“Both Mum and Dad have been so good to me, they have moved down here to assist me in achieving my football goals.”

Coach Jarrad Schofield was excited to see Lawrence’s dedication rewarded and was excited in seeing Lawrence bring his strengths to league footy.
“It is great to see Macca get his opportunity and his is a story that hard work and dedication is rewarded by our club,” Schofield said,
“We know that McKenzie will put his head over the ball and will give his all for his teammates on Saturday.”
Indeed it his ability to do the team thing and willingness to play a role that has made Lawrence a popular member of Subiaco with his teammates and fans alike.
“The club is everything, it will be amazing to pull on that jumper,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence will be the 10th player to debut for Subiaco this season.
Be sure to cheer Macca and his teammates on this Saturday when Subiaco travel to Lathlain to take on Perth in Round Eight WAFL action.
