By the Memories - Round Nine

While Subiaco face a bye in Round Nine of the 2018 WAFL Season, there have been a number of memorable Round Nine moments throughout the club’s history.

This week’s look back down memory lane includes yet another memorable draw after an epic comeback, a win in front of a big crowd and a memorable occasion for a club captain and modern day great.

These are the memories of Round Nine.

2017

Subiaco 127 d South Fremantle 88

Club captain and modern day great, Kyal Horsley earned life membership of the Subiaco Football Club by playing his 150^th game against South Fremantle in Round Nine last year. It was a momentous occasion and his charges lifted for the milestone match, winning a highly anticipated top of the table clash by 39 points. Twin small forwards Liam Ryan and Liam Baker each kicked four goals to lead the way forward of centre while Lachlan Delahunty had an outstanding all round game with 31 possessions and 29 hitouts. Not to be outdone the milestone man himself Horsley also had a great game, collecting 30 possessions and kicking three goals.

1993

Subiaco 171 d East Perth 61

Jason Heatley burst onto the scene in the 1993 season proving to be the ideal forward of the early 90’s with an outstanding lead, strong mark and accurate kick. After threatening to kick a 10 goal haul in the preceeding weeks, it was East Perth in Round Nine 1993 that felt Heatley’s full force. Heatley would bag 12 goals as Subiaco dominated East Perth winning by 110 points. East Perth were held to just three goals in the first three quarters while Subiaco dominated after half time with 17 goals. In just his fifth game of league football Jarrod Schofield kicked three goals as did Chris Batka and Kane O’Brien. Matthew Burton and Andrew McNish each kicked two goals.

1970

Subiaco 117 d West Perth 109

In front of one of the biggest crowds in home and away history for Subiaco, 13,565 were on hand to watch rivals Subiaco and West Perth play out an absorbing Round Nine clash. Subiaco stormed from the blocks kicking seven goals to nil in the opening quarter and were able to keep West Perth at bay despite some nervous moments as West Perth made a final quarter charge. Subiaco were fortunate for some poor West Perth goal kicking as the Falcons had seven more scoring shots yet kicked 14.25. Austin Robertson led the way with five goals for Subiaco with Graham Dearle and Ron Jacks each kicking three.

2010

Subiaco 147 d South Fremantle 121

In a high scoring thriller, Subiaco and South Fremantle played out an absorbing and high scoring battle at Leederville Oval in Round Nine of 2010. After South Fremantle defeated Subiaco in the 2009 Grand Final, this was the first rematch of 2010 and Subiaco came out swinging. In a back and forward match, no team could make a clear break through a high scoring first three quarters. Heading into the last Subiaco led by three points. Finally the game would break open in the last as the Lions kicked seven goals to three to record a memorable win. Marc Re and Phil Read each kicked four goals in the victory while Shaun Hildebrant had 30 possessions. Reece Blechynden and Ben Randall combined for 52 possessions while Kyal Horsley and Adam Cockie each picked up over 20 possessions and kicked two goals in the win.

1964

Subiaco 102 drew with East Fremantle 102

In one of the greatest last quarter comebacks in club history, Subiaco stole a draw with East Fremantle in Round Nine of 1964 despite trailing by 25 points at three quarter time. Incredibly after kicking just seven goals in the first three quarters, Subiaco kicked eight goals in the last eventually drawing with East Fremantle 15.12 to 14.18. Austin Robertson led the way with six goals for Subiaco while Laurie Kettlewell kicked four goals and Wally Martin two.
