By the Memories - Round 10

Round 10 has been one of mixed results from Subiaco, with even in recent times the club battling in Round 10 action.

In the past six Round 10 games, Subiaco has won only twice including a hard fought win over this weeks opponent East Fremantle 12 months ago in the corresponding fixture.

Despite the difficulties in Round 10, there are still some standout individual performances, some big team wins and two notable last quarter fightbacks.

This is Round 10 of Subiaco’s history in Memory Lane:

2017

Subiaco 108 d East Fremantle 77

For the second consecutive week, Subiaco celebrated a 150 game individual milestone with veteran Chris Phelan playing his 150^th game for the club. Phelan unfortunately failed to finish the match due to a knee injury, but the rest of his Lions teammates rallied around him, recording a 31 point win. Pre-match it had looked like a mismatch with East Fremantle at the bottom of the table and Subiaco at the top, but on a wet Saturday afternoon, East Fremantle played inspired football to lead late in the third quarter. Subiaco would steady with the last goal of the third quarter and dominated the last with six goals to two as they continued their progression through the 2017 season. Liam Ryan kicked four goals and Max Walters added three goals while Leigh Kitchin had 30 possessions and Corey Adamson had 28 possessions.

1984

Subiaco 204 d 102 Perth

Round 10 1984, Subiaco put on an absolute display for the fans with their performance ranking high in the record books. First the 204 points that were scored on the day ranks second all time for points scored in a match in Subiaco’s history. Secondly, Peter Featherby produced an unbelievable performance when he racked up 52 disposals and kicked a goal, the 52 disposals ranks second all time in the clubs history and 3^rd all time in WAFL history. Finally, Clint Brown also produced an amazing performance booting 9 goals in the win.

1995

Subiaco 96 d 95 South Fremantle

The rivalry between Subiaco and South Fremantle continued on this day in 1995 with another thrilling contest. When these two teams meet it always seems to go down to the wire and it was no different on this day. South Fremantle had the better of Subiaco for the entire match leading at the end of the first 3 major breaks, and headed into the last with an 8 point lead. However, an incredible six goal last term by Subiaco saw them take the lead and hold on to it, to win the match by a single point. Paul Ridley played a great game on the night scoring 3 goals in the game.  

2002

Subiaco 125 d 29 Swan Districts

On this day in 2002 Subiaco showed off its class once again in a display showcasing both its offence and its defence. Subiaco’s attack was in full force scoring 19 goals, however their defence was also on show as they limited the Swan Districts to less than 30 points. The Swan Districts were left scoreless in the first and last quarters, and had no answer for Subiaco throughout the game. This win was inspired by many quality performance’s with the best coming for Richard Ambrose with his 5 goals.   

1964

Subiaco 109 d 105 Claremont

As far as come backs are concerned, Subiaco produced one of the greatest last quarter comebacks in WAFL history. This match was clearly dominated by Claremont and after a disastrous third term in which Claremont scored 7 goals to Subiaco’s 1, Subiaco were down an incredible 47 points at three quarter time. After an inspiring three quarter time team talk by coach Keith Slater, Subiaco came out with something to prove. An incredible 10 goal last term saw Subiaco complete the comeback and win the match. This was the clubs biggest fourth quarter comeback and was inspired by 4 goal games from Austin Robertson and Reg Hampson.
