Subiaco’s Colts and Reserves each recorded important victories over East Fremantle to help consolidate their positions inside the WAFL top five.

 

Subiaco’s Colts rose to third on the ladder after ending a three game slide, while the Reserves third straight win sees the Lions in fourth.

 

RESERVES RECAP

 

Subiaco led from start to finish in recording a powerful victory over East Fremantle running our 47 point victors.

 

Subiaco extended their lead in both the first and second quarter before a strong finish where they kicked four goals to nil, saw the Lions double up their opponents.

 

Kaidyn Fullgrabe led the way in the victory finishing with 23 possessions while the consistent Daniel Leach once again was a standout with 22 possessions.

 

The Subiaco forwards shared the goals with Ryan Borchet, Sean Bradley and Thomas Edwards-Baldwin kicking two goals as Subiaco had 11 goal kickers on the day.

 

Subiaco will face another important battle next Saturday when they take on East Perth with the winner guaranteed to sit inside the top three as the half way mark of the season passes.

 

 

GAME CHANGERS

 

STRONG FINISHING

For the second game in a row, Subiaco saved their best quarter to last. Two weeks after kicking four goals to one against Perth, Subiaco backed up with a four goal to nil final quarter to finish strongly over East Fremantle. The current three game winning streak has been built on both an improved effort at the contest and strong fitness to finish off games.

 

ATKINSON CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

Jacob Atkinson continued his strong start to his Subiaco career with arguably his best performance at the weekend. Atkinson continues to play an important role in the Subiaco defence with his effort on Saturday coming in for special mention by coach Matt Cavedon. With outstanding size, Atkinson is building a good connection with fellow young defender Ben Reid as a formidably defensive duo.

 

COCKIE’S BACK

For the second season in succession, Adam Cockie has had his first half of a season riddle by injury. Cockie came in for his first game of the season on Saturday and finished off a solid first up hitout with 21 possessions and seven tackles. Cockie wasted no time in stamping his influence around the contest, laying two tackles in the games opening minutes to set the tone for the day for the Lions midfield.

 

FLETCHER REIGNS SUPREME

Subiaco recruit Jack Fletcher played his first game against his former club and was able to celebrate the occasion with a win. Fletcher topped 30 hitouts for the fourth straight game to lead the ruck, while also kicked his first goal in maroon and gold.

COLTS RECAP

 

A Jack Mayo inspired Subiaco returned to the winners list with the Lions recording a gutsy 13 point win over East Fremantle earlier on Saturday.

 

Mayo was the standout for the Lions, kicking six goals and spearheading Subiaco to a come from behind win after trailing at three quarter time.

 

In an entertaining final quarter, Subiaco piled on six goals to three turning a 10 point deficit into an important 13 point win.

 

The win was the Colts first since Round Four, with the young Lions having dropped three straight games coming into the game.

 

Liam Hickmott continued his outstanding recent form with 32 possessions while Tristan Hobley had 28 possessions.

 

Zane Shellabear-Healey and Taj Schofield each had 24 possessions while Schofield also kicked two goals.

 

Subiaco will get the chance to build on this win when they take on co-tenant rival East Perth next week who currently sit last on the WAFL ladder.

 

 

GAME CHANGERS

 

FINALLY A CLOSE WIN

After two narrow losses, Subiaco’s Colts were finally able to pull through in a tight victory. Interestingly Subiaco’s last two losses came after leading at three quarter time while they won this one after trailing at three quarter time. The win came on the back of five goals in ten minutes early in the last quarter as the young Lions turned defeat into victory.

 

PULLING THEIR WEIGHT

Jake McKinnon and Kyle Stainsby’s value to the Subiaco Colts was again on display on Saturday. Though they only combined for 24 possessions, they led the tackle count with 13 combined tackles. Their defensive ability was important several times throughout the game.

 

MAYO’S CAREER DAY

Jack Mayo bagged a career best six goals, topping the five goals he had against Swans earlier in the year.  Mayo has now kicked 25 goals in eight games this year, averaging over three goals a game to become the key spearhead for the Subiaco Colts forward line.

 

SCHOFIELD’S FORWARD IMPACT

Young gun Taj Schofiled continued his impressive development with the Subiaco Colts with his most polished performance at Colts level. Schofield posted career highs in possessions and forward fifty entries while also having his third multiple goal game of the season. Schofield’s ability to impact forward of centre was highlighted with a team leading six forward 50 entries complimented with two goals.
