Minor Grade Wrap - Round 12, 2018

Sunday, June 24, 2018 - 8:52 PM

For the third straight week Subiaco completed clean sweeps across the three grades, with the colts winning their third straight game and the reserves extending their winning streak to five.

Subiaco’s Reserves rose to top spot as the Subiaco Colts moved within four percentage points of creating a sense of history and having all three grades on top of the ladder.

RESERVES RECAP

Subiaco’s Reserves made it five straight wins climbing to top of the WAFL Resreves ladder in the process as they accounted for Swan Districts by 48 points.

The win was set up in the first half as Subiaco kicked nine goals to two, running away to a 49 point lead at the main break.

The match was tight for the majority of the second half as both teams added six goals, yet this early break meant Subiaco coasted to victory.

The win was spearheaded by another hard working midfield display from Daniel Leach who had a game high 36 possessions ably assisted by Adam Cockie who finished with 27 touches.

Andy Doyle proved a lively presence up forward and in the ruck kicking three goals while Ryan Borchet, Aaron Breman and David Ehlers also added two goals each.

Young midfielder Nick Menegola continued to work his way back to form following a quad injury collecting 20 possessions and showing some of his lively pace through the middle.

Another strong defensive effort was led by Ben Reid and Max Dennis.

Subiaco face a tough Reserves battle next week against third placed West Perth, the last team to beat the Lions Reserves, back in Round Six.

GAME CHANGERS

LEACH CONTINUES TO KNOCK

Daniel Leach has been named on the extended bench for Subiaco a handful of times this year indicating he is close to a highly coveted league debut. Leach couldn’t do much more to enchance his chances, collecting a career high 36 possessions, including 23 in the first half as Subiaco took control of the game. Leach has had 30 possessions three times in 2018 after never topping 30 coming into the year.

HIGH EFFORT FROM THE LIONS

Despite having the ball an extra 32 times in the game, and dominating the scoreboard, Subiaco’s high effort was highlighted by out-tackling Swans 63 to 50 on the day. Ryan Borchet, Adam Cockie and James Eccles led the way with six tackles each on the day.

DEFENCE DOES IT AGAIN

Subiaco’s recent strong form can be linked to an ongoing commitment towards better defence across the board. Subiaco conceded just 29 forward 50 entries against Swans as the midfield continued to ramp up their efforts to prevent attacking play of their opponents. Subiaco now statiscially has the best defence in the Reserves competition conceding just 62.1 points per game.

COLTS RECAP

For the second time in 2018, Subiaco proved too strong for Swan Districts, recording an important 21 point win to draw level on wins with top two Peel and Swan Districts.

A consistent four quarter performance across the board was the highlight of the win, as Subiaco led at every change and in fact never trailed after the 15 minute mark of the first quarter.

Tristan Hobley again led the way for Subiaco with 29 possessions while Jake McKinnon had 28 and Zane Shellabear-Healy had 27 possessions.

Jack Mayo and Jordan Faraone were the chief goal kickers on the ground with two goals each for the Lions.

State 18 Representatives Luke Foley had 25 possessions and five tackles while Xavier Peacock had 26 hitouts and 11 possessions.

Subiaco will be looking for a sense of retribution in their next encounter as they get set to tackle a West Perth outfit the inflicted the biggest loss of the year on the young Lions earlier in the year.

GAME CHANGERS

BACK TO WHAT WORKS

It was notable that this four quarter performance from the Subiaco Colts was highlighted with a strong win in the tackle count. Subiaco out-tackled Swan Districts 77 to 64, and as they did earlier in the year, Subiaco used pressure around the ball as the catalyst to its attack. Jake McKinnon was outstanding with 13 tackles while Will Hickmott had nine and Abraham Clinch seven tackles.

DOMINANT RUCK PERFORMANCE

Subiaco produced a dominant display in the ruck on Saturday. Both Xavier Peaock and Mach Deng had 26 hit-outs a piece, each having more individually than Swans had with a team, 21. Subiaco ended up winning the hit-out count 54 to 21 using this advantage to give Subiaco’s midfielders first hands on the ball.
