Colts & Reserves Win to make Successful NAIDOC Round

Subiaco’s strong all round season across its three grades continued with a clean sweep on NAIDOC round against Peel, with these wins seeing all three sides hold top two positions heading towards Round 15.

 

The Colts won a top of the table clash, moving a game clear at the top of the Colts table, while a return to winning form from the Reserves saw them move back to second on the Reserves Ladder.

 

COLTS RECAP

 

Subiaco’s Colts have all but secured their first finals appearance in five seasons with a hard fought 27 point win over Peel which took them to top of the Colts Ladder, having now won nine games on the season.

 

In what was a tight game for the most part of three quarters, Subiaco made a crucial break late in the third and then consolidated the advantage in the last quarter.

 

The win was again spearheaded by a strong defensive effort, with the young Lion colts holding Peel to just seven goals and 53 points on the game.

 

Tristan Hobley’s hot form continued with 28 possessions while Jacob Peletier had 24 possessions and seven marks.

 

Up forward WAFL Colt Leading Goal Kicker Jack Mayo continued his goal kicking form with three goals, while young forward Nick Martin also kicked three goals.

SUBIACO COLTS LEAD NAIDOC WAY

For the second year in a row, Subiaco’s Colts wore the Subiaco NAIDOC jumper to help celebrate NAIDOC Week. Continuing to lead the way for the WAFL Colts competition, the Colts this year participated in a pre-match gift giving ceremony. After winning on Saturday, the Subiaco Colts are now 2-0 in the special NAIDOC jumper.

 

ANOTHER DEBUTANT SHINES

Subiaco continue to provide opportunities to its young core, with another member of the Subiaco 16’s program given the opportunity to debut with Tyler Brockman having a key contribution to the win. Brockman finished with nine possessions, laid three tackles and kicked a goal to highlight a strong debut.

 

GOLDING TACKLER

Ben Golding had only 12 possessions on Saturday, but impressed with 13 tackles, a career high for the young forward midfielder. Golding has continued to improve and develop across the season and his defensive pressure has been a key added ingredient to the Subiaco Colts side.

RESERVES RECAP

 

Subiaco’s Reserves produced a strong bounceback performance from a disappointing loss a week prior, comprehensively beating Peel in Round 14 action.

A night after Subiaco’s league team held Peel to two goals in a 52 point win, the Reserves held Peel to just five goals and pipped the league victory for a 53 point victory.

 

Subiaco made their run in a strong first half, kicking 10 goals to two including six goals to one as Subiaco applied tremendous pressure in the second quarter.

 

On the comeback from injury Craig Hoskins was very good with 27 possessions while Max Dennis had 26 possessions and Daniel Leach 22 possessions with nine tackles.

 

Up forward Subiaco was well served by Sean Bradley who had an impactful first half and finished with three goals, as did Adam Cockie.

 

Youngsters David Ehlers and Christian Martin each kicked two goals.

 

The win helped lift Subiaco’s Reserves back to second on the ladder, just one win behind top placed Claremont.

EXPLOSION FROM DENNIS

After having a career high of 16 possessions through his first nine Reserves games, Max Dennis produced a career high 26 possessions, enjoying additional freedom in game number 10 and making the most of that freedom. Dennis also laid a career high six tackles showing when given the opportunity he can make the most.

 

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT FOR MARTIN

Youngster Christian Martin had been one of the young Colts to impress during pre-season, but an end of pre-season injury saw him miss the first three months of the home and away season. After biding his time, Martin was given his first opportunity with a WAFL Reserves debut on Saturday and made a strong debut. Finishing with 12 possessions, nine marks and two goals, Martin looms as another local product with strong prospects with Subiaco.

 

RUCK DOMINANCE

Subiaco had a strong edge in the ruck with the duo of Tim Sutherland and Andy Doyle leading Subiaco to an 80 to 20 advantage in hit-outs. Sutherland shouldered the load as number one ruck and produced a dominant 52 hit-out game while Doyle showed his versatility with 27 hit-outs, 10 possessions and a goal.
