Subiaco accounted for Peel by 52 points in Friday Night Footy to commence Round 14 of the 2018 WAFL season.

Though goals were few and far between, a stellar defensive performance from the Lions ensured that there would be some key highlights and key numbers from Subiaco’s 12^th win on the trot

SCORELESS QUARTER – Subiaco held Peel scoreless in the third quarter of Friday night’s game. Subiaco has had 10 goalless quarters conceded in 2018 and now three scoreless quarters. It is the third year in a row that Subiaco has held Peel to a scoreless quarter having also done so in Round 18, 2017 and Round 22, 2016.

TACKLES – Josh Deluca made a strong start to Friday night’s game, having seven tackles in the first quarter alone. Up against his former teammates, Deluca set the tone on the inside with nine possessions and the seven tackles. Deluca finished the game with nine tackles and is the standout tackler at Subiaco in 2018.

MARKS – On a tough night for marking, given a slippery ball and slippery conditions, Ben Sokol produced an impressive forward performance collecting nine marks. Two of Sokol’s marks were contested and on a night where most found it difficult, Sokol was a notable exception with his strong and clean hands.

CLEARANCES – Leigh Kitchin collected a team and equal game high 10 clearances on the night. Kitchin’s strong work inside was a showing back to his best football of his 2017 Outridge Medal season.

SPOILS – Defender Aaron Heal was one of the key defensive architects behind a dominant Subiaco defence, registering 11 spoils on the night. Heal’s ability to outpoint tall opponents in the air continues to be a feature of the versatile veteran of the Subiaco back six.

POINTS – Subiaco held Peel to their second lowest score against the Lions, just shading the 1.10 scored back in 2002. The 17 points conceded was the best defensive effort in over 10 years by the Lions and helped improve the Subiaco defence to a league best of just 52 points per game in 2018.

HITOUT DIFFERENTIAL – For one of the few times this year, Subiaco was dominated in the hit-out count with Peel collecting 62 hitouts to Subiaco’s 32. However a resilient Subiaco miefield performance saw the Lions almost draw level in clearances, finishing back just one, 39 to 40. Zac Clarke had 26 hit-outs but trailed Scott Jones who finished with 32.

INSIDE 50 DIFFERENTIAL – The one stat that effectively showed the attacking intent of the two sides, was the inside 50 count. Subiaco dominated this category, eventually finishing up plus 34. Subiaco were in line with their season average of inside 50 entries with 60, but were well below their average conceded, as Peel rarely threatened to mount sustainable attacking thrusts.

TURNOVERS – Subiaco forced Peel into 82 turnover on Friday night. This was favourable compared to Subiaco themselves who had just 61 turnovers. When considering that Subiaco led disposals 380 to 306, this turnover differential was significant in the outcome with Peel turning the ball over every 3.75 possessions.

GAME SCORE – By games end, the two teams could muster just 86 points combined, making this the lowest scoring game in the WAFL in 2018. Of the top eight combined lowest scores in 2018, this is Subiaco’s only entry while Peel feature in five of those lowest scoring games.

CONTESTED POSSESSION – In a tight, contested game, Subiaco held sway in contested possession 179 to 131, another significant gap on the night. In showing that Subiaco were more determined around the contest compared to their opponents, Subiaco had nine players collect at least 10 contested possessions compared to Peel who had just three.
