Goldfields Win Landmark Division 2 Championship
The Goldfields Football League has claimed the 2018 Division 2 Landmark Country Championship after going through Country Week undefeated and beating Mortlock by 33 points in Sunday’s final.
The win was a fitting reward for two years of hard work for coaches, players and support staff of the Goldfields, after falling in the final in 2017.
Subiaco’s Regional team of the Goldfields started their quest for the title at Subiaco’s metropolitan home, winning two matches on Friday at Leederville Oval, overcoming Mortlock in their first game and Ongerup in their second game under lights on Friday night.
After a tight first half against Mortlock in their opening game of the carnival, Goldfields clicked into another gear in the second half of their round robin match, eventually defeating Mortlock by 12 points. Former Subiaco player Greg Broughton kicked two goals and Subiaco Reserves Premiership Player Dylan Clarke was named in the best in win number one.
Goldfields dominated game number two against Ongerup holding their opponents goalless, running out 36 point winners. Michael Stevens kicked two goals in the win and Jordan Delbridge was named best.
Following up on Saturday, Golfields accounted for both Lower South West and Central Midlands Coastal, recording comfortable wins to head to Sunday’s final unbeaten.
Goldfields defeated Lower South West by 38 points with Michael Stevens kicking three goals, Bevan Bennell and Alex Devitt each contributing two goals.
The win over Central Midlands Coastal meanwhile saw the Goldfields record their highest score of the round robin series, kicking 11.6, with Alex McLeod kicking five. Alex Stewart was named as one of the Golfields best along with Jordan Delbridge.
Sunday’s final started inaccurately for Goldfields as they battled to make the most of their forward opportunities, conceding the first two goals to Mortlock.
However after the quarter time break, Goldfields started to take advantage of the match and got the game on their terms.
Mortlock continued to fight, but a big second half ensured that Goldfields could enjoy the last quarter knowing they would achieve the ultimate in Country Week success.
Alex McLeod kicked four goals in the final with Bevan Bennell and Greg Broughton kicking two goals.
Alex Stewart, Jayden Bootsma and Jebb Swallow were named as best for the Goldfields in the final.
