Memory Lane - Round 16
The 2018 weekly look back down memory lane moves to Round 16.
While Subiaco have the bye in Round 16 of 2018, it is still a round that has had its share of memorable wins, great memories and standout performances.
There have been narrow wins, underdog victories as well as some memorable big victories. From the 1970s, across to last year, these are some of the best wins and best memories of Round 16.
2011
SUBIACO 18.11.119 d SOUTH FREMANTLE 16.15.111
Subiaco ventured to their regional zone, with the first ever WAFL game played at Ports Oval in Esperance for Round 16 of 2011. It would be a memorable first visit as well, with the Lions kicking two crucial late goals to defeat South Fremantle. Despite going into the game as underdogs, Subiaco burst from the blocks with six goals to one. South Fremantle hit back over the next two quarters to reduce the margin to four points at the last change. In an epic final quarter that went back and forward, it was local hero Clancy Wheeler who kicked a clutch late goal in the Subiaco win. Blake Broadhurst and Rhett Kerr each kicked four goals while Jason Bristow had 25 possessions. Veteran Ali Pickett kicked three goals while a young Brad Stevenson also added three goals.
2017

Subiaco celebrated NAIDOC round with a powerful performance and dominant win over Perth. A year removed from Perth’s stunning upset over Subiaco, the Lions were determined to ensure that lightning did not strike twice. Subiaco led by 24 points at the first change and extended their lead at every change, finishing up 82 point winners. On NAIDOC round Adam Cockie was a fitting best on ground with 30 possessions and seven tackles, while Kyal Horsley and Lachlan Delahunt each added 26 possessions. Liam Ryan led the goal kickers bagging four with Ben Sokol adding three. On debut local product Ryan Vermeersch kicked two goals, as he celebrated game number one with a big win.
1985
SUBIACO 22.16.148 d CLAREMONT 12.17.89
With finals in the consideration of both Subiaco and Claremont the two teams played out a pivotal Round 16 clash in 1985. Subiaco had held a commanding 33 point half time lead, however Claremont stormed back in the third with six goals to reduce the margin to two points. In a late quarter blitz though, Subiaco produced one of their all time great last quarters, kicking 11.7, almost doubling their three quarter time score of 11.9. Ultimately the big last quarter saw Subiaco run out 59 point winners. Michael Mort and Leon Perry combined for eight goals while Dwayne Lamb led Subiaco with 34 possessions, Peter Spencer had 32 possessions and Bevan Warner had 27 possessions.
1972
SUBIACO 15.8.98 d WEST PERTH 13.12.90
West Perth were heavy favourites going into Round 16 of 1972 sitting fourth, while Subiaco were in seventh. However this would be one of those games where great full forward Austin Robertson would single handily inspire Subiaco to a memorable and unlikely win. After trailing throughout the first half, Subiaco kicked eight goals in the third quarter to steal the lead and in a tight final quarter, found a way to hold onto a narrow lead, causing a big upset at Leederville Oval. Robertson accounted for over half of Subiaco’s score kicking 8.3 while Mike Fitzpatrick and Rod Jasper each kicked two goals. George Young, Brian Sierakowski and Peter Metropolis all had a big impact in the comeback win.
1999
SUBIACO 13.11.89 d EAST PERTH 11.6.72
Subiaco and East Perth made the trip to Exmouth for a regional battle in Round 16 of 1999 with Subiaco warm favourites sitting third on the WAFL ladder going in. Subiaco proved to be too good on this occasion, overcoming a half time deficit to power away behind a big second half. The Lions kicked eight goals to five, proving too strong in the final quarter. Todd Ridley bagged five goals, while fellow talls Dean Irving and Andrew Donnelly kicked two. Nathan O’Connor continued his strong 1999 season with two goals.
