Subiaco Idol - The Review

Saturday, July 21, 2018 - 9:45 AM

The Leederville Sports Bar came to life last Saturday night, as in a new venture between the club and the football players, a variety show entitled “Subiaco Idol” came to life.

With Ladies Day having taken place earlier in the day in the Leederville Sports Bar, there was a great atmosphere in the room as players came up following their respective wins over South Fremantle in Reserves and League action.

“Subiaco Idol” saw Subiaco’s eight senior squad pod groups combine into four teams of two pods each, with each group to produce their own performance of a popular or hit song.

The start of “Subiaco Idol” saw the long waited return of “The King of Rock Elvis”, expertly played by club music legend Joe Phelan.

Elvis was joined on the “Subiaco Idol” judge panel by member of the Subiaco Women’s Football Team Andie Phillips as well as a specially selected judge from the room in Gail.

Judges in place, the first performance was set, with Pod leaders Chris Phelan and Justin Joyce seeing their respective groups team up to create Phez Swag, performing a Jackson Five greatest hit in ABC.

The group received praise from the judges for their ability to get the crowd involved as well as some strong choreography that improved as the performance went on.

The second performance produced the most risqué performance of the night, as Pod leaders Jordan Lockyer and Hayden Kennedy led their groups with a performance of Satisfaction by Benny Benassi.

The Oobie Doobie Speedos that have been a staple of the Subiaco senior squad in 2018 were given a workout as in a special effort, assistant coach Nigel Hamilton joined the group, proving to be the only member of the coaching group to get involved in a performance.

Third group up was Lachlan Delahunty and Clancy Wheeler joining Pod group forces for a very special remix of Grease.

Going all out on the prop department, Delahunty produced the talking point of the night when he rode into the Leederville Sports Bar on top of a motorbike.

The final group to perform was the Pod groups of Leigh Kitchin and Kyal Horsley who channelled their efforts to re-creating Beyonce’s hit Run the World (Girls).

Not to be outdone in the prop department, the group incorporated Lion skin, unbelievable costume wear and confetti cannons to finish the performances with a bang.

Before going to the judges final verdict, there was one more unexpected performance with former Subiaco Lion Matt Bogensberger producing the performance of the night with a sensational performance of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean.

With the judges scores calculated, in an incredibly tight final vote count, only 3.5 points separated first from fourth.

It would come down to ABC against Grease Remix, and in the end it was the combination of outstanding prop and set-up work coupled with great choreography that saw the Grease Remix take out the winning performance of the first “Subiaco Idol”.

All those who attended are thanked for their attendance and the Subiaco players are in particular acknowledged for their willingness to help make an unforgettable night with a series of unforgettable performances.
