Colts & Reserves Make it a Round 18 Sweep

Monday, August 6, 2018 - 12:13 PM

It was a clean sweep Saturday for Subiaco, as both the Reserves and Colts recorded hard fought wins across a soggy day.

In low scoring games, the Colts were outstanding defensively recording a 38 point win and the Reserves had a big final quarter recording a 17 point win.

With the respective wins, the Colts remain on top a game clear of second place Peel, while the Reserves are second, one game behind top place Claremont.

COLTS RECAP

The Subiaco Colts continued their strong form in Round 18, holding opponent Swan Districts goalless through the first half on route to a 38 point win.

On a water logged Leederville Oval, Subiaco showed typical toughness around the contest and had winners all over the field, consistently finding a way onto the scoreboard.

Subiaco extended their lead through the first three quarters, leading by 11 points at quarter time, 23 points at half time and 38 points at the final change.

Subiaco was well led in the midfield with dominant games by Liam Hickmott who had 35 possessions and Tristan Hobley who had 30 possessions.

Up forward Jack Mayo kicked three goals from 18 possessions while Zane Sheallbear-Healy kicked two goals from 24 possessions.

Defensively captain Madoc Plane led his team well from behind the ball.

Subiaco Colts need to win two of their final three games to officially lock up top spot and a first week bye in finals, with their first chance for one of those two wins coming against West Perth next Saturday.

GAME CHANGERS

DEFENCE COMES UP BIG AGAIN

Similar to their league counterparts, Subiaco’s success in Colts football this year has come through a miserly defence. The Lions Colts have conceded just 54 points per contest, with the 21 scored by Swans on Saturday, their lowest score conceded this season so far. Subiaco Colts are now the number one defensive team in the competition.

THREE FOR THREE OVER SWANS

Subiaco won for the third time this year over the Swans Colts. Impressively across those three games, Subiaco has held Swans to less than 50 points in all three games and just 13 goals across the three games. With Swan Districts looming as a possible finals opponent having strong recent form could be a key.

TACKLE LEADERS

Kyle Stainsby led Subiaco with 10 tackles while Taj Schofield had seven tackles. Subiaco again won the tackle count, finishing plus five, 74 to 69.

HOT HOBLEY FORM CONTINUES

Tristan Hobley had another 30 possession game, his second in succession and third for the season so far. Across the past eight games, Hobley is averaging 29 possessions. Not to be outdone, Liam Hickmott had his fourth 30 possession game of the year and is averaging 32 possessions on his past three weeks.

RESERVES RECAP

Subiaco rebounded from last week’s narrow loss to Claremont defeating Swans after a stunning fourth quarter comeback.

After trailing by eight points at the final change, Subiaco were dominant in the last quarter as they recorded 4.9 to 1.2, turning that eight point deficit into a 17 point win.

Clancy Wheeler gave Subiaco the lead for good after a nice set shot late in the last quarter with a returning Shannon Nelson and Ryan Mu adding two late ones to seal the win.

James Eccles led Subiaco with 21 possessions while Max Dennis, Adam Cockie and Ray Daniels each had 18 possessions.

Up forward Clancy Wheeler was the only multiple goal kicker finishing with two goals.

Subiaco face a crucial clash next week when they take on West Perth, second against third, on the WAFL Reserves table.

GAME CHANGERS

COMEBACKS A PLENTY

A trio of Subiaco players came back in for Saturday’s game. Clancy Wheeler played his first game in four weeks and his first Reserves game in four years working his way back from injury and Shannon Nelson played his first game in 11 weeks. But the highlight of Saturday was Reid Polak playing his first game in over 12 months. Polak made a successful return from a knee injury, finishing with 11 possessions and three marks.

COCKIE & LAWRENCE BRING THE PRESSURE

Adam Cockie continues to be one of the standouts of the Subiaco Reserves, finishing with 18 possessions and an equal team high 10 tackles. Mckenzie Lawrence also laid 10 tackles as Subiaco comfortably won the tackle battle 94 to 66.

EVEN SPREAD

16 of Subiaco’s 22 players recorded at least 10 possessions, with every player having seven or more touches in an even display from the Lions. James Eccles continued his strong form to lead the way with 21, the only Subiaco player with more than 20 possessions on the day.
