Subiaco Women Helping Shape Development Squads

The partnership between the Subiaco Football Club and the Subiaco Football Club Women’s has continued to strengthen across the 2018 season, with three women from the Subiaco Women’s team taking up the opportunity to assist with development coaching at the club.

Lauren Stammers, Claire Ortlepp and Rachel Ortlepp, who have been key pieces of the Subiaco Women’s team in 2018, have all commenced in the past month assisting the Subiaco Development squads.

Claire is assisting with the 14’s program under 14’s coach Zac Clarke while Rachel and Lauren are working with the 15’s program under 15’s coach Tom Lowndes.

All three ladies have received wide praise, bringing their own unique experiences and teaching style to the next generation of Subiaco players.

“All three ladies have really been able to integrate well with the coaching staff,” Subiaco Talent Manager Michael Farmer said.

“Their communication and understanding of the game has really assisted the boys in the earlier part of the squads and we really look forward to their energy and experience as we move to the carnival next month.”

For Lauren Stammers her involvement in the program is about preparing her for the next stage of football.

“I’m getting closer to the end of my playing career but I still want to be involved in footy once I have stopped playing,” Stammers said.

“I injured my knee last year, so had a little bit of coaching experience while I was injured and really enjoyed it.”

Having helped with coaching with the Subiaco Women’s Team, Stammers has enjoyed working with Subiaco’s next crop of male players.

“The boys are like sponges,” Stammers said.

“I think they just really respect the experiences that you might have had with footy and are keen to learn from our playing experience.”

While the boys have enjoyed having Stammers unique insight, she is equally high of praise for her fellow coaches.

“I have learnt so much from the other coaches,” Stammers said.

“Tom has been great, really accommodating with me and I have picked up a lot from him on how he runs drills and takes training sessions.”

For Rachel Ortlepp coaching has always been of interest to both her and twin sister Claire, having had coaching experience with the Subiaco Women’s Rogers Cup team in 2017.

“When I started coaching last year it was really just putting my hand up to fill a gap,” Ortlepp said.

“Having said that, they weren’t twisting my arm, I really wanted to do as I just have a real passion for footy and coaching.”

As for her involvement with the Subiaco Development Squad, Rachel saw it as both a great opportunity to further her coaching aspirations while passing on her own experiences.

“I just love passing on the knowledge that I have of the game,” Ortlepp said.

“I have always loved the behind the scenes part of footy, so coaching has always felt reasonably natural.”

For both Rachel and Claire, the experience they had in getting into footy was very similar to any young boy, it was all about having a kick with Dad.

“Our brother never had a real interest in footy so we used to just go out the back and have a kick with Dad,” Ortlepp said.

“He really enjoyed us playing and I think he likes seeing the passion we have for the game.”

Subiaco’s Development Squads will play in their 2018 carnival across September and October.

The Subiaco Women’s team will play Peel Thunderbirds in the Preliminary Final of the 2018 WAWFL season, this coming Sunday at Fremantle Oval.

All Subiaco fans are encouraged to get along and support the Subiaco girls as they aim to make another Grand Final in 2018.
