By The Numbers - Round 20, 2018
Subiaco progressed one step closer to achieving the first undefeated WAFL league season since 1946, extending their win streak in 2018 to 17 games.
A number of 2018 recruits had an impact on Subiaco’s win over East Fremantle, while the numbers were all in favour of Subiaco in the 91 point win.
Meanwhile it was a historic day for the Subiaco Colts as they ended a 30 year drought, still aiming to end another 29 year drought.

MINOR PREMIERSHIP – Early Saturday, the Subiaco Colts completed an impressive feat, securing the club’s third WAFL Colts Minor Premiership. This followed up the same achievement in 1981 and 1988. It had been a 30 year drought for a minor premiership and sits as a 29 year premiership drought for a premiership for the Colts. Interestingly the last team to win a League and Colts Minor Premiership in the same year was East Fremantle, 20 years ago in 1998.

INTERCEPT MARKS – Drew Rohde produced one of his best games of the season, with one of the features his intercept marking. Rohde took four marks from opposition kicks, time and again positioning himself in the right spot, or outpointing his opponent. Rohde’s excellent use of the ball by hand and foot have made him a valued addition to the Subiaco side.
5
CONSECUTIVE WINS – Subiaco beat East Fremantle for the fifth straight time, with Subiaco’s last loss to the Sharks back in Round Eight of 2016. The margins across that five game winning run has been a combined 364 points, making the average winning margin across those five games just under 73 points.
6
MARKS – While Zac Clarke only took six marks in Saturday’s win, impressively he reeled in five contested grabs. Whether it was taking strong marks and converting inside 50, or giving Subiaco’s defence leaving the back 50, Clarke was a presence in the air, all afternoon.
7
POINTS CONCEDED – Subiaco’s defence held an opponent under 50 points for an incredible seventh time this season. East Fremantle could only register 46 points, the second time they have failed to pass 50 against the Lions after scoring only 37 back in Round 10. In four of their last six games, opponents have failed to pass 50 as Subiaco tighten the screws defensively.
9
TACKLES – Rowen Powell made up for a lean day finding the footy, with ferocious intent around the contest. Powell laid a career high nine tackles along with a series of heavy hits, having an important defensive impact through the middle. Young gun, Tom Edwards-Baldwin was another to make a defensive impact laying a career high eight tackles up forward.
15
GOALS – Subiaco youngster Tom Edwards-Baldwin has rocketed to 15 goals, just seven games into his WAFL league career, producing his fourth bag of three goals in Saturday’s win. Since his injection into the team in Round 12, Edwards-Baldwin has been a consistent threat inside forward 50 and has given Subiaco another goal kicking option. Edwards-Baldwin sits seventh in the team for goals in 2018 with his goal per game average of 2.1 trailing only Brad Stevenson this year.
20
TEAM GOALS – Subiaco kicked 20 goals in Saturday’s win, the fifth time they have reached the 20 goal mark this year. They achieved the feat four times in their first six games, before an 11 game break between 20 goal games. After a five week stint failing to pass 100 points, Subiaco has found its offensive momentum again with more than 100 points in its last two wins.
102
INSIDE 50s – Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley is the first player in the WAFL to pass 100 forward 50 entries for the season, with four on Saturday taking his tally to 102. Horsley has averaged over five forward entries a contest in 2018 giving important drive to the attacking half of the Lions.
204
HANDBALL – For the second straight game Subiaco registered 200 handballs in a match. Having not achieved that feat through the first 15 games, Subiaco has now looked to use the hand more in wins over West Perth and East Fremantle. Subiaco finished with just two more kicks than handballs, the closest they have come to having handballs beat kicks in a game in 2018.
627
HITOUTS – With 32 hitouts on Saturday, Zac Clarke is now the WAFL’s leader for hit-outs, pipping Brock Higgins 627 to 625. Clarke’s steady improvement around the contest in 2018 has been pivotal to the stoppage and clearance work of Subiaco this year.
