Subiaco Women Set For Grand Final this Sunday at Claremont
The Subiaco Football Club Women’s team are set to cap off a whirlwind first year after being rebranded from Coastal Titans, set to contest the 2018 WAWFL Grand Final.
Subiaco who finished the qualifying season in fourth spot, are set to battle the WAWFL Minor Premiers in East Fremantle this Sunday at Claremont Oval.
The League Grand Final will commence at 2.30pm, with a large contingent of Subiaco supporters expected to converge on Claremont Oval to support the ladies to what would be a famous win.
Subiaco has been forced to come the hard way to the Grand Final, not cementing their finals spot until the last game of the home and away season when they defeated the Perth Angels.
Arguably though, Subiaco has produced its best football in the finals, recording upset wins over Swan Districts in the First Semi Final and then Peel Thunderbirds in the Preliminary Final last Sunday.
It has been a season full of highs and lows for the Subiaco Ladies, embracing the change to Subiaco, with five home games being played at Leederville Oval underlights and another two games being full round Women’s fixtures at Leederville.
A long season will culminate on Sunday with Subiaco Women’s looking to win their eighth club premiership after winning seven flags in the past 14 years under the Coastal Titans banner.
All Subiaco fans are encouraged to show their support for the girls and paint Claremont Oval in Maroon and Gold, with a tinge of dark blue!
GAME CHANGERS
SECOND HALF TURNAROUND
Finals were the last thing on the mind of the Subiaco Women after round eight, when they slipped to a 2-6 record to be sitting in sixth, three games and 60% away from a finals position. However the Subiaco girls showed fight, character and courage across the last two months of the season, as they bandied together as a group to play some outstanding team football. They won six of their last eight games to finish 8-8, grabbing the last finals spot up for grabs.
THE INSPIRATIONAL LEADER
Without doubt the Subiaco Women’s season has been led by its captain Hayley Miller. The versatile midfielder had a big second half to the season, leading her team strongly in every game and inspiring her team to several key wins. Miller’s outstanding season was recognised with the Dhara Kerr Fairest & Best award. On Sunday she will look to add team success to her individual success.
GOALS GALORE
Key Subiaco forward target Amy Lavell could be pivotal to Sunday’s Grand Final. Lavell has been in hot form over the past two months, kicking 22 goals in her past five games. In two low scoring finals, Lavell has proved a difference maker with four goals in each finals game so far. Keep an eye on Lavell inside 50 to play a key role for Subiaco on Sunday.
FINALS FAST STARTERS
Subiaco’s Women have provided two finals upset so far on the back of fast starts. In the First Semi Final, Subiaco built a 22 point half time lead and were able to maintain their advantage through the second half, while in the Preliminary Final they led Peel by 23 points at half time. A fast start in the Grand Final could be pivotal for Subiaco.
NEEDING SOME CLOSE LUCK
Subiaco’s Women has not had much luck in the close ones in 2018. In games decided by single figures, Subiaco has a 1-4 record on the year. If this year’s Grand Final is a close one, Subiaco will be hoping that their luck is going to turn in their favour when it matters most.
SETTING AN OMEN
With Subiaco's three men's grades all sitting on top of their respective WAFL ladders, the Subiaco Women could create the start of a historic six weeks for the Subiaco Football Club. Exactly 10 years ago the Subiaco Women set a strong omen winning a premiership a month before the men while each teams last premiership year was 2015. Subiaco fans are hoping success on Sunday leads to mre success next month.
PAST ENCOUNTERS
Subiaco has met East Fremantle three times during the 2018 season, falling to the minor premier in all three games. East Fremantle were far too strong in Round Seven, winning a one-sided match by 48 points. However Subiaco will take great confidence in their two other performances against East Fremantle. In Round Five they led in the last quarter before falling by three points, while most recently in Round 13, East Fremantle edged a nine point win. While the ladder and past results may not suggest it, these are two very evenly matched sides, and a desperate Subiaco Women’s team is very capable of a Grand Final upset.
