Subiaco Set to Complete 2018 Home & Away Season against Perth
Subiaco are set to complete their 2018 Home and Away campaign with their final home game of the season against Perth at Leederville Oval this Saturday.
Subiaco which has locked up top spot and a first week bye in finals, will look to use this match to fine tune and ensure that all players remain at full fitness and are prepared for what promises to be another tough finals series.
Fans are encouraged to attend Leederville Oval on Saturday to cheer on the Lions and see if they can create history as the first side in over 70 years to complete an unbeaten run through a WAFL home and away season.
Subiaco has one confirmed change with Ben Newton out of the side.
One of his possible replacements will come from Nick Menegola, Chris Phelan, Michael Braut and Braden Fimmano who are the four players to come in to the extended 25 man squad.
The game will be covered on digital stations FootyRadio and KIX Digital while NoongarFM will have a live game call also.
GAME CHANGERS
BACK IN THE MIX
Chris Phelan was a late out for last week’s match with East Fremantle but is back in the squad for this week. Braden Fimmano has also overcome a slight niggle and is back in the squad after a week on the sidelines as well. Subiaco still has some talented players fighting to get back from injury and a host of young players in the mix in Reserves football. It makes for an interesting fortnight leading up to the league second semi final.
CHASING 1946
Through WAFL history there has been only two teams complete undefeated home and away seasons. In 1944 East Perth went 19-0 while in 1946 East Fremantle also completed a 19-0 season. Interestingly, Subiaco are the only team in WAFL history to be just one win away from an unbeaten season, three times completing one loss home and away seasons. The 2018 squad is looking to go one better than the teams of 2017, 2008 and 1912.
CHASING 1912
Subiaco has remained with a percentage in excess of 200 all season. Heading into Round 21, the Subiaco percentage sits at 218.85 just one percent behind the clubs all time best season percentage of 219.88 recorded back in 1912. A potential big win over Perth would add another record to what has been a history making home and away season so far.
SECOND HALF CHALLENGE
Subiaco takes on a team in Perth whose defence has consistently been better in the second half of games. The Perth team concede over 53 points per game in first halves, yet concede less than 44 points in second halves. Look for Subiaco to be aware of this and be prepared for a second half fight from the Demons on Saturday.
TACKLE TEST
One area that Subiaco will need to be ready for, is a desperate Perth playing for their finals life and applying enormous pressure at the ball carrier. Perth have averaged more tackles in games in 2018 as opposed to Subiaco and has been good at laying tackles in the forward half. Subiaco’s defensive group need to be aware of the pressure that comes from Perth and will have a key role to play in ensuring Perth do not get any momentum.
RESERVES ONE WIN AWAY FROM MINOR PREMIERSHIP
Subiaco’s quest to complete a hat-trick of minor premierships, rides on the Subiaco Reserves being able to beat Perth on Saturday and hence claim the Reserves minor premiership. The Reserves game will commence at the usual time of 11.30am.
COLTS HEAD TO SUBIACO
The Subiaco Colts will compete in the WAFL’s Colt Super Round for Round 21, with Subiaco set to take on Perth at Subiaco Oval at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. The Lions have already claimed top spot and a first week bye, but like the league squad will use this match to fine tune ahead of their second semi final on Sunday September 9th. Fans are able to attend Subiaco Oval for free to watch the Colts Super Round. Subiaco will be on Subiaco Oval from 3pm.
