By The Numbers - Round 21, 2018

Thursday, August 30, 2018 - 8:07 AM

Subiaco completed a perfect 18 and 0 home and away season, with a 72 point win over Perth in Round 21 action.

The Lions built their lead at every change, recording another four quarter victory and in the process entered themselves into the Subiaco history books.

These were some of the important numbers behind win number 18 of the season.

1

UNBEATEN HOME & AWAY SEASON – Three times before Subiaco has recorded one loss seasons, 1912, 2008 and 2017. The 2018 Lions finally became the first Subiaco side to go through a home and away season unbeaten. A great accomplishment for a great home and away season, but ultimately a record that will mean nothing unless Subiaco can win the final game of 2018.

2

RED TIME SCORE – An impressive Subiaco defensive effort was highlighted by their ability to stop Perth in red time. Through the first three quarters Perth were unable to register a single red time score. The last quarter they kicked two behinds, meaning they finished the day with just two points in red time.

5

GOALS – Subiaco forward Ben Sokol had a bounceback to goal kicking form, finishing with five goals from 10 marks. Sokol leads Subiaco with 37 goals on the season and was important for Subiaco with three first half goals to help break the game open for Subiaco.

9

SPOILS – Angus Litherland had nine spoils in an impressive defensive display from one of Subiaco’s key defensive playmakers. Subiaco recorded 27 spoils in the game with Litherland and Jacob Miller recording almost 50% of these, combining for 13 spoils.

13

CLEARANCES – Subiaco inside midfielder Josh Deluca recorded 13 clearances, consistently giving Subiaco first opportunity out of the middle and around the stoppages. Deluca finished his game with 30 possessions, over half of these coming as contested possessions, another indication of the fight Deluca showed on the inside.

16

FIRST QUARTER – Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley made a fast start to Saturday’s game, collecting 16 possessions in the first quarter. Though he slowed somewhat after quarter time to finish with 30, it still meant that Horsley led the Lions in possessions, something he has done with regularity in 2018.

27

EFFICIENCY – Subiaco held Perth to just 10 scoring shots on 36 inside 50 entries, recording a defensive efficiency of 27%. Defence has been one of the hallmarks of the Subiaco season so far, and again the Lions were ruthless in this area, unrelenting in their efforts to prevent Perth from getting manageable scoring opportunities.

50

HITOUTS – Zac Clarke recorded 50 hit-outs in Round 21 action. It was the fourth time this season that Clarke had reached that milestone. Building into the season, Clarke has become the WAFL’s premier ruckman, finishing number one for hit-outs in 2018.

100

POSSESSIONS – Subiaco finished exactly plus 100 in possessions on Saturday. Subiaco finished at 424 made up of 240 kicks and 180 handballs compared to Perth’s 324 made up of 192 kicks and 132 handballs.
