Saturday, September 8, 2018 - 7:41 AM

The year long look down memory lane moves to finals, with the top five Subiaco moments from Second Semi Final history.

It is an interesting history that Subiaco has with Second Semi Finals.

The club incredibly went nearly 70 years without winning a Second Semi Final, remarkably Subiaco played in four straight Grand Finals in the 1980’s, never winning a Second Semi Final in that span.

The more recent golden era has been kind to Subiaco with some momentous and memorable wins taking place in the past 15 years on route to Grand Final apperances.

This weekend’s rival South Fremantle and great rivals West Perth feature, as do Claremont, three teams that Subiaco has fought tight battles with in finals this millennium.

Take a look back at some of those five most memorable contests in Memory Lane.

2006

-- Subiaco 97 d 90 South Fremantle --

After finishing top of the home and away ladder, Subiaco got to host runners up South Fremantle for a place in that year’s Grand Final. The opening half would be highly contested, as no team was able to take the ascendency in the match. The third quarter would not follow this pattern as South Fremantle took control and lead Subiaco by 19 points at the final break. However, the lions would not give in, scoring an incredible 7 goals in the last to come away with the 7 point win. Matt Priddis and Jared Schofield played great games recording 31 and 29 disposals respectively and Allistair Pickett provided the scoring punch kicking 4 goals on the day.

2004

-- Subiaco 128 d 68 Claremont --

Another dominant season saw Subiaco once again sit top of the ladder heading into finals. They would take on a classy Claremont side in what was expected to be a tight contest. However, Subiaco would write their own story as they came out firing, taking a 33 point advantage into the half. An even more dominant third quarter where Subiaco kicked 5 goals to nil would kill off the game. Both teams would kick 6 goals in the last and Subiaco would come away with the 10 goal victory. Brad Smith put on a master class up forward as he kicked 6 goals, leading his team to the win.

2003

-- Subiaco 80 d 72 West Perth --

The 2003 season was dominated by 2 teams Subiaco and West Perth, and as a result the two teams would meet in the second semi-final. The first half was a low scoring tightly contested affair where Subiaco would lead the match by a slender 3 point margin. The third quarter would follow the same pattern set in the first half which would set up the last quarter nicely. The last quarter would be goal for goal but Subiaco would be the better team on the day as the held onto their 8-point win. Brad Smith and Luke Toia would provide the threat up forward kicking 3 goals each.

2016

-- Subiaco 96 d 56 South Fremantle --

Another top of the table finish for Subiaco saw them head straight to the second semi-final where they would face second seed South Fremantle. After beating South Fremantle in both meeting between the clubs in the regular season, Subiaco were strong favourites heading into this one. A tough opening half put the pressure on Subiaco to respond in the second, and although they led at the break the game was still in the balance. Subiaco would respond in typical fashion in the third kicking 6 goals to 1, virtually killing off the game. Subiaco would go onto to win the match comfortably on the back of a classy performance by Leigh Kitchin who recorded 35 disposals and a goal and Liam Ryan who kicked 4 goals on the day.

2015

-- Subiaco 115 d 60 West Perth --

Heading into this contest, Subiaco were wanting to right the wrong of one year ago, and win their second semi-final. Having been the best team all year, Subiaco faced a second seed West Perth and were expected to win comfortably. However, West Perth would come out strong and lead Subiaco in the first quarter. The second quarter would tilt back the way of Subiaco as they regained the lead. A half time team rev up would see Subiaco come out guns blazing as they would score 10 goals to West Perth’s 3 in the second half leading them to their big win. Lachlan Delahunty played a brilliant game recording 30 disposals and Sam Menegola produced another classy performance with his 28 disposals 2 goals.
