Wil Hickmott Stars at AFL State Combine Testing
Subiaco’s Wil Hickmott was one of the standout performers as the national AFL Draft visits came to Perth last weekend.
Hickmott who is a highly regarded under-age player from Subiaco’s Colts system has long been regarded as a possible AFL draft selection linked to his father Adrian Hickmott.
However it was Hickmott’s performance in Sunday’s WA State Draft Combine that has elevated him under further draft scrutiny.
Hickmott posted the best times in the three key draft tests held at the State Netball Centre.
In the 20 metre sprint, Hickmott recorded a 2.86 second time, beating out his nearest rivals Jason Carter and Dylan Curley.
In the agility test, Hickmott recorded a 8.13 second time, shading Jarvis Pina and Louis Miller.
Hickmott had the best Yo-Yo test, finishing at Level 21.3. Subiaco teammate Jack Mayo was another one to excel in this test, finishing at Level 20.8.
Impressively for Hickmott while his times were the best in the state, they were also among the best when comparing to the AFL National Combine,
His 2.86 sprint time was better than any recorded at the National Combine, while his 8.13 second agility test would have been good for fourth at the National Combine.
Likewise his 21.3 Yo-Yo test would have placed him in the top 20 of this year’s draft class, highlighting the powerful traits that Hickmott could potentially bring to the AFL.
Hickmott who has links to Carlton as a possible father-son selection, was a key member of the Subiaco Colts premiership in 2018, averaging over 21 possessions, four marks and three tackles per contest.
Meanwhile, the performance of Mayo was particularly pleasing considering he was the only tall to feature prominently in state testing, highlighting his athleticism as a possible key forward at AFL level.
Mayo is another one of Subiaco’s possible draft prospects after an outstanding season at Colts level which saw him finish as the leading goal kicker for the competition.
Mayo finished with 50 goals on the season averaging over 14 possessions and five marks a contest, with his ability to work up the ground and provide a target heading forward winning praise from coaches and recruiters alike.
Subiaco was also represented at the AFL National Combine, with premiership winning Colts midfielder Luke Foley testing.
Foley who overcame injury to play in the 2018 WAFL Colts Grand Final and test at the National Combine, posted impressive performances in a number of key areas and looms as a potential Subiaco draftee in next month’s AFL Draft.
Along with Hickmott, Mayo and Foley a number of other Subiaco Colts premiership players are in consideration with Tristan Hobley and Liam Hickmott’s seasons at WAFL level likely to see them in the mix on draft and rookie draft days.
At a senior level, veteran ruckman Zac Clarke and powerful inside midfielder Josh Deluca are being strongly considered for second opportunities at the AFL, while Angus Litherland, Kyle Halligan, Ben Sokol and Lachlan Delahunty are all outside chances of hearing their names called on draft day.
