Parliamentary Statement by Tony Krsticevic MLA, Member for Carine

I rise to acknowledge the unique achievements of the Subiaco Football Club in winning the 2018 West Australian Football League premierships in all three grades.

Those successes were elevated further by the league team going through the 2018 season undefeated—the first team to do so in WA’s peak football competition since 1946.

Coach Jarrad Schofield marshalled a talented band of players into a formidable unit. He has done so for the last six years, with Subiaco winning three of the past five league flags, and it took an Australian Football League player–laden Peel Thunder to defeat the Lions in 2016 and 2017.

While on-field success is what every football club strives for, Subiaco has also kicked many off-field goals. Its junior programs foster community spirit and a healthy lifestyle and I am proud as a vice-patron of the club that many of these programs occur in my electorate.

Subiaco has also embraced multicultural programs that give everyone in the club’s zone the opportunity to learn about the great Australian game, enjoy mateship and galvanise the district. The club has a strong link with the Edmund Rice Centre, which assists those from migrant backgrounds, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

So it was particularly heartening to see that multicultural element represented in the Lions’ triumphant colts team.

I congratulate club president, Mark Lawrence, and chief executive, Peter Capes, for their outstanding work in leading Subiaco to success on the field and in the community.
