Baxter Hutchinson Walks For Brain Cancer Research

In the lead up to the 2018 WAFL Grand Final, while the battle was set to take place on Optus Stadium, for one of Subiaco's directors, Bret Hutchinson, a far more significant battle was underway off the field. 

Baxter Hutchinson, son of Bret, on September 20, just three days before Subiaco’s Grand Final decider, underwent surgery to remove two medulloblastoma tumours that had been discovered in Baxter.

After an 11 hour operation, the majority of the primary tumour had been removed with the second being considered inoperable. 

The surgery was gruelling on Baxter, coming out of surgery he could not move his arms or legs, speak or swallow.

As he began his recovery medical opinion was that Baxter would take six to 12 months to recover while starting radiotherapy under a clinical trial.

However, doctors had not factored in the spirit, determination and resilience that Baxter Hutchinson possesses. 

Within seven weeks he had recovered to the point where he could walk, talk and eat; attending his high school graduation.

It remains a long road to recovery for Baxter, but his attitude and determination to beat cancer, means the world is still at his feet.

Showing the incredible character of Baxter, despite still going through his own battle, Baxter has jumped into supporting cancer research and using his own experience to further knowledge. 

Last weekend Baxter participated in the Walk4BrainCancer, his first effort at raising funds to help find a cure to a disease that has changed his life. 

Through a school friend, Baxter’s battle was heard by Minderoo Foundation’s Andrew Forrest, who has committed to matching dollar for dollar, every donation that Baxter raises. 

With a target of $100,000, Forrest has agreed to putting up another $100,000 should Baxter reach his target meaning this could see $300,000 committed to cancer research. 

To date Baxter has raised over $40,000 and the Subiaco Football Club calls on all members and fans to help support a wonderful Subiaco family and give to support brain cancer research.

The whole Subiaco Football Club admires the determination, resilience and positive attitude that Baxter has displayed through his health battle.

Likewise the club admires the efforts and strength of character of Bret and his family in supporting Baxter.
