Subiaco 2019 Fixture Announced
The path to repeat for Subiaco has been set, with the WAFL announcing their 2019 fixture this morning.
The season will kick off with a bang for Subiaco, with the club set to raise its three premiership banners from 2018, with a home game in Round One on Saturday April 6th.
This match looms with extra significance with the battle to be against co-tenant East Perth, marking the first match the Royals will play following the separation of their alignment with West Coast.
With the occasion of Subiaco raising their banner and East Perth returning as a non-aligned club, this could be one of the highest attended matches of the season, as the two passionate fan bases look to support milestone achievements of their respective clubs.
The big opening to the season for Subiaco continues a fortnight later, with the Lions set to play a highly anticipated match with the West Coast Reserves on Good Friday, April 19th.
This blockbuster game is scheduled to commence at 1.10pm, allowing West Coast fans to see both their teams play on the same day, with the easy transit from Leederville Oval to Optus Stadium set to be a winner amongst dual AFL and WAFL fans.
This game will also be the club’s Family Fun Day with planning and partnerships already in place with the City of Vincent to ensure this becomes a day to celebrate kids and families from within the Subiaco district and in the local Leederville community.
Corporate Manager Cameron Palmer said the club had already begun with planning for the 2019 season and were keen to make the most of the marquee matches early in the season.
“The start of the season is a great opportunity for all Subiaco fans to get behind and support their team,” Palmer said.
“Two of our biggest games of the year come in the first month of the year and we are keen to really capitalise, give fans and families a great day at Leederville Oval with hopefully two massive crowds on hand to support the Lions.”
In a new look 10 team competition, with the looming entry of the West Coast Reserves to the WAFL competition, Subiaco will play ten scheduled home games and eight scheduled away games.
Both matches against West Coast Reserves are scheduled as Subiaco home games at Leederville Oval.
The second game against West Coast Reserves will take place in late July.
The run home is also set to be kind to Subiaco, with just one match after June 30th to be an away game.
Six of Subiaco’s last seven games are at Leederville Oval, as the club will look to make a run towards the 2019 finals series from the familiar surrounds of their home ground.
In another win for traditional footy fans, the majority of Subiaco’s ten home games are set to be Saturday afternoon matches.
“While we want to continue to provide a match day environment that brings in new fans, whether that be families or sports fans, it is great that the tradition of footy on a Saturday afternoon has been retained in Subiaco’s 2019 fixture,” Palmer said.
“We want Leederville Oval to be a venue that all our fans and members want to be at all season and hope the continuity of Saturday football is supported.”
Fans hoping to see the Grand Final replay against West Perth will have a wait on their hands, with Subiaco travelling to Joondalup in Round 12, while Subiaco host West Perth in their last home game in Round 19.
In terms of away fixtures the highlights include; a potential Thursday night game at Lathlain against Perth, a WA Day long weekend clash in Mandurah against Peel and finishing the year with an away game against co-tenant rivals East Perth.
