The Winners - Pre Season Game 2
Subiaco continued to build towards their first official season match in a fortnight’s time, with the league team running out comprehensive 36 point winners over Swan Districts at Bassedean on Saturday.
After playing a split game against East Perth a week ago, this represented the first chance for Subiaco’s senior players to go at it over four quarters of action.
After an inaccurate start, kicking four behinds to start the game, the Lions took control building up a match winning lead across the first half.
They extended the lead early in the second half before Swans showed some fight to finish the game out, eventually bringing the margin back to its final 36 point difference.
These are some of the Subiaco winners from Saturday:
WINNERS
CLANCY WHEELER
After an injury plagued last two years, Wheeler has rounded into strong form late in pre-season and was the most important forward in Saturday’s contest. Presenting a target consistently inside 50, Wheeler showed his typical prowess in the air and at ground level. A threat in front of the sticks, Wheeler finished off a solid display with four goals.
JACK BEVERLEY
Wearing the number 15 in 2019, Beverley has put together two strong performances to start his season. Beverley has proven to be lively across half forward, with his hardness at the contest a feature so far. A highly regarded young player on the list, Beverley looms as one to debut at league level in 2019.
DREW ROHDE
Despite being only two weeks into pre-season, Rohde has picked up where he left in 2018, offering poise and skill in the back half for Subiaco. Rohde played every game in 2018, including the league premiership win and was an underrated member of the back six during their history making defensive run. Early indications are that Rohde again looms as a key player to get the ball to in the back 50.
DASHING DEFENDERS
Playing in the reserves on Saturday the duo of Duane Oxenham-Smith and Nixon Hamlet showed promise with their attack from behind. Both Oxenham-Smith and Hamlet had impressive dashes from behind and showed strong pace as an added feature of the Subiaco back line. Hamlet new to Subiaco and Oxenham-Smith new from the Colts program will offer the Lions a different look in 2019, with their dangerous run to create from behind.
CLEAN SWEEPS
Four Subiaco teams went up to Bassendean on Saturday and all four came away with wins. Alongside the league’s win, the Reserves had a narrow seven point win, the Colts bounced back from a disappointing first up loss to win by 24 points and the Futures made it two wins from two to start their season with a 17 point win. Subiaco will round out their pre-season at home against South Fremantle this coming Saturday.
