The Winners Pre-Season Game 3

Monday, April 1, 2019 - 9:00 PM

Subiaco completed their 2019 pre-season, with early wins over East Perth and Swan Districts before a last start loss to South Fremantle.

Subiaco rolled through over 35 players across their three league games, managing a group of veteran stars, young up and comers from within the squad and a host of new players to the club.

Despite the loss to South Fremantle last Saturday, there were still positives to come for Subiaco.

These are the winners of the last weekend of pre-season:

WINNERS

JOSH DELUCA

The tough inside midfielder has been one of Subiaco’s standouts over the 2019 pre-season. Deluca was one of the winners on a tough day for the Subiaco midfield, giving typical hardness at the contest throughout the day. Deluca was particularly impressive around the stoppages and clearances, also finding his way forward kicking another goal, as he did in the game against Swans. Deluca looms as one of Subiaco’s prime midfield movers in the 2019 WAFL season.

BEN NEWTON

Netwon offered a typically skilful performance on Saturday. Like Deluca, Newton was one of the few midfielders to enjoy a strong day, showing his silky left foot across the afternoon. Elevated to the Subiaco leadership group in 2019, Newton has continued to grow in this area across the off and pre-season. His performance on Saturday, being one of the leaders who continually stepped up, showed the growth in his game and around the Subiaco group. Like Deluca, in his second year in the Subiaco system, Newton appears ready for a big season.

RHYS WATERS

After an injury interrupted pre-season, Wates returned for his first action of the season, playing with the Subiaco Reserves. It was a stunning last quarter burst that led to Subiaco storming to a victory and Waters was one of the keys behind the win. Finishing with four goals and showcasing his typical pressure around the ball and inside 50, Waters created a number of chances for his teammates. Based off last Saturday, Waters has timed his run to perfection to have an impact in the 2019 season.

OMENS

While Subiaco completed an undefeated home and away season and finals series; those with a long memory will remember that Subiaco were beaten in last year’s pre-season. Just like on Saturday, going down to a likely premiership contender, Subiaco were beaten by Peel in Mandurah 12 months ago by nearly seven goals. Just like last year, Subiaco has completed its pre-season with two wins and a loss. Those who believe in omens may have smiled a little bit when they found out Saturday’s result.

FUTURES

Subiaco’s Futures remain top of the table after three rounds, having held top spot through all three weeks of this young Futures season. After a tight first half against South Fremantle, the Subiaco Futures showed their class and poise by running away to a comfortable win in the second half. After winning a Colts premiership last year, the pathway coming through the club looks very bright for the Lions.
